Today's tour took us to the south of Burgundy, to Cluny – famous for its Benedictine abbey. After driving, we started at the central parking lot and rolled out into the rolling hills of the Mâconnais region. Cobblestones and old townhouses quickly faded away, and on the Voie Verte, a disused railway line, peace and nature accompanied us for a few kilometers. Following small back roads, we finally reached Mont de Gremoi, the highest point of the tour at 470 meters. From there, we relaxed back to Cluny. The highlight of the day was a walking tour through the medieval town and the mighty remains of the abbey. Founded in 910, it shaped the religious life of Europe for centuries and was once the largest church in Christendom – until the construction of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Although the abbey was destroyed during the French Revolution, its impressive ruins still dominate the cityscape today. Finally, we treated ourselves to a café crème in the market square before heading back to Saint-Agnan.
