Highlight • Religious Site

The church, built in 1666, is named after Nuestra Señora de la Peña. On the main altar there is an alabaster figure of the Virgin Mary, 23 centimeters high, in the French late Gothic style. The figure represents the rock maiden (Our Lady of the Peña), patron saint of the island since 1675.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I park to start the Tiscamanita and Agua de Bueyes Loop?

The loop can be accessed from several points, but a common starting point is near Vega del Río Palmas, which is also the endpoint for the SL FV 28 section. You can typically find parking in or near the villages of Tiscamanita or Agua de Bueyes, or Vega del Río Palmas itself, depending on where you choose to begin your hike.

What is the best time of year to hike this route?

Fuerteventura generally offers pleasant hiking weather year-round. However, the cooler months from autumn to spring (October to May) are often preferred to avoid the intense summer heat, especially given the trail's semi-desert landscape with limited tree cover. Always check the local weather forecast before heading out.

Are there any permits or entrance fees required for the trail?

No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Tiscamanita and Agua de Bueyes Loop. The trail is located within the Betancuria Rural Park, a protected natural area, but access for hiking is generally free. Please respect the natural environment and follow any local regulations.

Is the Tiscamanita and Agua de Bueyes Loop suitable for beginners or families with children?

This loop is rated as 'difficult' and requires 'Very good fitness' due to its length of over 16 km and significant elevation gain of over 730 meters. While some sections are easier, the overall route is challenging and not recommended for beginners or young children. It's best suited for experienced hikers with good stamina.

What kind of terrain can I expect on the hike?

The trail features the characteristic geomorphological landscape of Fuerteventura, primarily consisting of earth and stone paths. You'll encounter sections with gradual ascents, such as the 'Cuesta de la Villa' on the SL FV 28 segment, which has an approximate 10% incline. The terrain is generally well-marked, but expect varied surfaces typical of a volcanic, arid island interior.

What notable sights or landmarks will I see along the way?

The loop offers extraordinary views of the island's interior. You'll pass by the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Peña and traverse sections of the Camino Natural de Tiscamanita – Vega de Río Palmas Trail Junction. From elevated points, you can enjoy panoramic vistas encompassing Betancuria, Vega del Río Palmas, Gayría, and the plain of Antigua.

Does the trail intersect with other hiking paths?

Yes, the Tiscamanita and Agua de Bueyes Loop is formed by combining two local trails, the Trail SL FV 28: Agua de Bueyes – Vega de Río Palmas and the SL FV 31 Trail. The route also passes through sections of the Tiscamanita - Vega del Río Palmas, Agua de Bueyes - Vega del Río Palmas, and Camino Natural de Fuerteventura trails.

Is this trail dog-friendly?

While Fuerteventura is generally dog-friendly, specific regulations for this trail within Betancuria Rural Park may apply. It's always best to keep dogs on a leash to protect the local wildlife and ensure their safety on the challenging terrain. Be sure to carry enough water for your dog, as sources are scarce.

What kind of flora and fauna can I observe?

The landscape is semi-desert, but you can spot resilient plant species such as tamarisks, verodes, wild spurges, gorses, sea buckthorns, cuernuas, and wild olive trees. Remnants of prickly pears, historically cultivated for cochineal, are also present. Wildlife is sparse but may include various bird species adapted to arid environments.

What should I bring for this hike?

Given the trail's length and difficulty, it's crucial to bring plenty of water, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), sturdy hiking boots, and appropriate clothing for varying conditions. Snacks or a packed lunch are also recommended. A map or GPS device is advisable, even with clear signage, to navigate the loop effectively.

Are there any cafes or restaurants near the trail for after the hike?

Yes, the villages of Tiscamanita, Agua de Bueyes, and Vega del Río Palmas, which are part of or close to the loop, offer local cafes and restaurants where you can refuel and relax after your hike. These establishments provide a chance to experience local Canarian cuisine.

February 4, 2024, Durchs grüne Fuerteventura - von Tiscamanita auf den Gran Montana

Hike over the heights in the interior of Fuerteventura. Here in the nature reserve you get a completely new impression. Several hiking trails lead through. Our circular route led from Tiscamanita over the 710 m high “Gran Montana” over the ridges through opuntias and other greenery. Unfortunately, the hiking trails that were laid out years ago on the steeper sections are very washed out and not particularly easy to walk. The way back leads along a track through agriculture and scattered settlements, but is easy to walk.

A "top tour" from Rother. And yes, it really is a beautiful mountain hike. The views along the gently sloping path down to the ridge are magnificent. The vegetation is surprisingly diverse.
