The Tour of Les Gavarres is a circular route that starts and ends in Llagostera. You can find parking in Llagostera to begin your ride.
This route primarily features well-paved roads, characteristic of the Les Gavarres massif. However, be prepared for significant elevation changes, including challenging climbs and enjoyable descents. The route includes the notable Els Àngels Climb from Girona, which has steep sections.
The Tour of Les Gavarres offers a rich blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. You'll cycle through dense oak and cork tree forests, picturesque valleys, and rolling fields. The route also passes charming medieval villages like Monells and offers panoramic views of the Baix Empordà region, with distant views of the Pyrenees on clear days.
No, this route is rated as difficult. With a distance of nearly 79 km and over 1000 meters of elevation gain, it requires a very good level of fitness and experience with road cycling, especially given the challenging climbs like Els Àngels.
The Les Gavarres region is enjoyable for cycling for much of the year. Spring and autumn generally offer the most pleasant temperatures for this challenging route, avoiding the peak heat of summer. Clearer days will enhance the panoramic views.
Key highlights on this route include the challenging Santa Pellaia Pass and the iconic Els Àngels Climb from Girona. You'll also pass through the charming Monells — Medieval village, enjoy views from Llegada a Madremanya, and see historical structures like Pedret Bridge and Sant Cugat Church, Fornells de la Selva.
Yes, the route partially follows sections of several official trails, including 'Volta per les Gavarres' (35%), 'Gran volta pel Baix Empordà' (9%), and 'PirineXus' (8%). It also briefly touches upon 'Girona-Madremanya' and '[CIMA GI01] Els Angels'.
This route is designed for racebiking on roads, which may not be suitable or safe for cycling with dogs. It's generally best to leave your canine companions at home for this particular tour.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to cycle the roads within the Les Gavarres massif. It is a natural park, but public access to its roads is generally free.
Yes, the route passes through several villages, including Monells and Madremanya, where you can find cafes or small shops to refill water bottles and grab a snack. Girona, a major cycling hub, is also nearby and offers numerous amenities.
The Els Àngels Climb from Girona is a significant challenge on this route. It's advisable to conserve energy before this section, maintain a steady pace, and be prepared for steep gradients, especially towards the top. The reward is a fantastic descent and panoramic views.
Our last day cycling in Girona already! After two incredible weeks, it was almost time to clean and pack up the bikes. But not before we could get another perfect loop with a good mix off adventure, climbing and smooth rolling tarmac. We climbed the first half up to Els Angels over trails of Puig Estela. A mountainbike might be more suited for these trails, but we managed to wrestle our way up, not complaining a bit since we were so happy to be in such a beautiful environment. The rest of the climb over tarmac felt like smooth sailing, compared to what we had done just before that. We enjoyed the breathtaking scenery from the top, with views all the way to the Pyrenees and the Costa Brava. The downhill to Madremanya was a dream, with soft turns and an easy gradient. In Monells we stopped for coffee at the fairytale square. We laughed at the most horrible latte art we'd ever seen and filled our water bottles by the tap on the square. When we wanted to continue our ride, we realized my rear brake had locked itself, clamping tightly on the disc rotor. We managed to push it outwards a bit, but thank goodness it was the last day. Our 3T Exploro's and the new Rebel wheels really proved themselves over the last day, as we abused them way too harsh. The Santa Pellara climb offered stunning views all over the green surroundings, and the road surface and the behaviour of the drivers were excellent. We can definitely see why so many cyclists move to this amazing place. We are definitely coming back for more!
