Dogs are generally not allowed on the Canyon Trail section of the Trail of Ten Falls, which is where most of the waterfalls are located. However, dogs on leash are permitted on the Rim Trail and in other areas of Silver Falls State Park. Always check park regulations before bringing your pet.
The Trail of Ten Falls is open year-round. Spring is often considered ideal, as the waterfalls are at their fullest due to rainfall and snowmelt, and the forest is vibrantly green. Fall offers beautiful autumn colors, while summer provides warmer hiking weather. Even in winter, the trail offers a unique, serene experience, though conditions can be wet and chilly.
The full loop, which is approximately 7.8 kilometers (4.8 miles) long, typically takes around 2 hours and 15 minutes to complete. This duration allows for enjoying the scenery and taking photos, but individual times may vary based on pace and stops.
The trail leads through a lush rainforest environment within a dense forested canyon. You'll encounter towering Douglas fir, hemlock, and cedar trees, with moss and ferns covering the forest floor. The path includes some climbs and stairs, especially when ascending out of the canyon, but much of it is relatively flat. Expect some rocky paths, which can be slippery, particularly behind the waterfalls.
This trail is renowned for its ten magnificent waterfalls, with the unique opportunity to walk behind four of them: South Falls, Lower South Falls, Middle North Falls, and North Falls. This immersive experience allows you to witness the power of the water from a unique vantage point, often getting soaked by the mist. The trail also features dramatic basalt columnar cliffs and well-maintained paths, some dating back to the Civilian Conservation Corps.
The Trail of Ten Falls is generally rated as moderate. While it includes some elevation changes and stairs, its difficulty is often attributed more to its length than technical challenge. Many families with children who are comfortable hiking find it accessible. Sturdy shoes are recommended due to potentially slippery sections.
Wear sturdy, waterproof hiking shoes or boots, as sections of the trail can be wet and slippery, especially behind the waterfalls. Layers of clothing are advisable, and a rain jacket or poncho is a good idea to stay dry from waterfall mist. Bring water, snacks, and a camera to capture the stunning scenery.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Rim Trail and the Canyon Trail, offering options for longer or shorter variations within Silver Falls State Park.
You'll encounter ten beautiful waterfalls, including the impressive 177-foot South Falls and Lower South Falls, both of which you can walk behind. Other highlights include Middle, Lower North and Drake Falls, and Winter Falls, each offering unique views and experiences.
