Ladybower & Derwent Reservoir loop from Fairholmes Car Park — Peak District National Park

Cycling

Embark on a difficult touring cycling adventure around the Ladybower and Derwent Reservoirs. This 14.6-mile (23.6 km) loop, with an elevation gain of 1617 feet (493 metres), takes about 2 hours and 10 minutes to complete. You'll experience stunning waterside views, pass through shady woodlands, and see the impressive Derwent Dam. The route features a mix of tarmac roads and smooth gravel trails, with some challenging hilly sections, especially along the eastern edge of Ladybower Reservoir.

Start your journey conveniently from Fairholmes Car Park, which offers pay-and-display parking, a visitor center, and refreshment kiosks. You can even hire bikes here if you need one. Given the varied terrain of tarmac and gravel, a hybrid or mountain bike is recommended for this route. Be aware that after crossing the Ashopton Viaduct, you'll need to stay on the pavement and pedal uphill, as bikes are not permitted on a footpath immediately after.

Beyond its natural beauty, this area holds significant historical importance. The reservoirs were famously used by Lancaster Bomber pilots for practice bombing runs during the Dambusters raids in WWII. The iconic Derwent Dam, a key feature you'll encounter, played a central role in these practice flights. This unique history adds another layer to your touring cycling experience in the Peak District National Park.

Bridge End Pasture and Crook Hill Bridleway

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

lovely stretch of grassy track across moorland that runs along the ridge of the pasture, good in both directions. Very ridable on a gravel bike.
We rode it north to south, climbing up the track from Rowley Farm and descended via the road to Crook Hill Farm. Whichever way you ride it, the climbs to get up there from either end are pretty steep but once you're up on top the views are great. Worth the effort, although in bad weather I imagine it could get pretty muddly up there.

Western Shore Road, Ladybower Reservoir

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

A pretty easy way to end a bunch of rides round these parts. Brings you out nicely at the reservoir crossing to nip back to the Ladybower Inn for some much needed sustenance!

Ladybower Reservoir Overflow

Highlight • Structure

The path along the top of Ladybower Dam affords a wonderful view of the reservoir nestling in the Upper Derwent Valley. You also get a close look at the reservoir overflows (essentially giant plug holes), which draw photographers from far and wide.

Ladybower was constructed between 1935-43 after the villages of Derwent and Ashopton were flooded (residents were rehomed nearby). It was officially opened by King George VI on September 24, 1945.

It’s actually a footpath. Don’t know why, if you take it steady on a bike there’s not normally any complaints

Ladybower Reservoir

Highlight • Structure

Ladybower is a large reservoir in the Upper Derwent Valley. The lake is surrounded by rugged upland, rolling farmland and majestic woodland, making it a wonderful place for myriad walks. When you climb above the reservoir, breathtaking views over the water await. The reservoir was built between 1935 and 1943. It was officially opened by King George VI in September 1945.

Derwent Edge Bridleway

Highlight • Trail

A technical and testing bridleway between the top of Derwent Edge and Ladybower Reservoir. It's pretty rocky and can be wet, with slippy or peaty mud in-between! If you're on a gravel bike it's a good challenge - as always take care and be respectful to other trail users. Be nice, say hi!

Descent to Ladybower Reservoir

Highlight (Segment) • MTB Park

Rutty mud at the top, flagstones at the bottom. An excellent descent!
