Hiking

Embark on a moderate 8.6-mile (13.8 km) hike that takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes, offering a diverse journey through the Suffolk Coast & Heaths. With only 128 feet (39 metres) of elevation gain, this largely flat route combines coastal paths, marshland, and heathland. You will walk along boardwalks through reedbeds, enjoy views of the tidal estuary of the River Blyth, and pass by colorful beach huts.

Prepare for varied terrain on this route; while mostly flat, some sections can get very muddy, especially after rain, so sturdy shoes are a good idea. The trail connects the vibrant town of Southwold with the picturesque village of Walberswick. During summer, you can take a passenger ferry across the River Blyth, adding a unique touch to your journey. A footbridge is also available if the ferry is not running or if you prefer to walk the entire way.

This loop is a haven for birdwatchers, especially in the marshlands and reedbeds, where you might spot Marsh Harriers, Bearded Tits, or even hear booming Bitterns. The area is part of the Suffolk Coast & Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, known for its rich mosaic of habitats. You will also pass historical landmarks like the 18th-century cannons on Gun Hill in Southwold, which once defended against pirates.

Southwold Beach and Beach Huts

Highlight • Structure

Southwold is a vibrant and picturesque town on the Suffolk coast. Its gorgeous sandy beach, interesting pier and colourful promenade are worth an amble, while the town centre has all the amenities you could need. The town was the home of 1984 novelist George Orwell between 1921 and the Second World War.

Gun Hill Cannons

Highlight • Viewpoint

There are six cannons here on Gun Hill, once an 18th century defence against pirates. There are lots of benches up here to enjoy the sea views but keep an eye out for the ghost of James Martin, a soldier who looked into the barrel of gun number 1 after it misfired and his head was blown off. The guns haven't been fired since then back in 1842.

Southwold Harbour

Highlight • River

Blackshore can get really busy in the summer so be prepared to hike a bike for safety's sake. Also its known to flood especially on spring tides so be aware. Bikes aren't salt water friendly.

The Harbour Inn Southwold

Highlight • Restaurant

Didn't stop for food or drink, so can't comment on the pub itself – but amazing to see how high the flood water came in 1953.

Corporation Marshes

Highlight • Trail

The walk opens out to a vast marsh down to the sea. You will be very unlucky not to see Marsh Harriers here or hear booming bitterns in the spring.

Reed Boardwalk, Walberswick

Highlight • Viewpoint

Walking down from the village of Walberswick you enter the boardwalk from here which can take you to the beach, the wind pump to your right or the village of Dunwich further down the coast. Walking amongst the reeds gives you plenty of chances to spot some of the wildlife that lives here such as Bearded tits, Harriers, Egrets and Spoonbills.

Walberswick Village Green

Highlight • Beach

On the tidal estuary of the River Blyth, Walberswick is a picturesque village. The centre is set around a village green with a dune backed beach, a cafe and a pub. The interesting village church, St Andrew's, was built in the ruins of its much grander predecessor in the 18th century. Although popular, it is much quieter than neighbouring Southwold.
During the summer months there is a ferry across the river which links Walberswick with Southwold.

February 23, 2022, Reydon loop via Southwold, Walberswick

Easy walking, start at the Randolph pub in Reydon just outside Southwold , Walberswick then return back through Southwold. Plenty of nice cafes and pubs along route.
