Embark on the Ravello, Amalfi, and Path of the Lemons Loop, a difficult hike that immerses you in the vibrant landscapes of the Amalfi Coast. This challenging route covers 10.6 miles (17.1 km) with a significant elevation gain of 3000 feet (914 metres), typically taking around 6 hours and 4 minutes to complete. You will traverse fragrant terraced lemon groves and ancient mule tracks, offering a rich blend of agricultural charm and dramatic coastal vistas. Expect to encounter vibrant flowering plants and varied terrain, from paved sections to natural dirt trails. The trail rewards your effort with unparalleled panoramic views, including the iconic town of Positano cascading down the hillsides and the expansive Gulf of Salerno.

Before you set out, be aware that this difficult loop demands very good physical fitness due to its significant elevation changes and numerous steps. Sturdy hiking shoes are essential for navigating the varied terrain, which includes ancient mule tracks and natural dirt paths. Plan to start early in the day to allow ample time for completion and to avoid the midday heat, especially during warmer months.

This extensive loop offers a comprehensive experience of the Amalfi Coast's diverse landscapes within the Parco Regionale dei Monti Lattari. It combines the famous Sentiero dei Limoni, known for its terraced lemon groves, with dramatic coastal sections. The route provides numerous viewpoints, allowing you to appreciate the unique geography where mountains meet the sea. This trail is a notable way to explore both the agricultural heritage and the stunning maritime scenery of the region.

This beautiful church is a bit of a mystery to me. It's big, and it appears to be Romanic, but it doesn't feature on the list of POIs on Komoot (yet) and also doesn't appear on the Google map.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the overall difficulty of this panoramic trail?

This combined loop, which includes sections of the Sentiero dei Limoni and extends towards Positano, is rated as difficult. It requires very good physical fitness due to its length (17.1 km) and significant elevation changes (914m up and down). While the Lemon Trail (Sentiero dei Limoni) itself is generally easier, the full loop is a much more demanding hike.

What kind of terrain can I expect on the route?

The terrain is varied and challenging. You'll encounter a mix of paved paths, ancient mule tracks, natural dirt trails, and a substantial number of stairs, which are characteristic of coastal hiking in this region. Some sections, especially the descent into Positano, can involve over 1,800 to 2,500 steps and may be rocky and uneven. Sturdy hiking shoes with good grip are essential.

What are the best times of year to hike this trail?

The best times to hike this trail are typically spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October). During these seasons, the weather is milder, and the landscapes are vibrant. Summer can be very hot, making the strenuous sections more challenging, while winter might bring unpredictable weather. Always check the local weather forecast before you go.

Are there any permits or entrance fees required for hiking in the Parco Regionale dei Monti Lattari?

No, generally there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike this trail within the Parco Regionale dei Monti Lattari. However, always respect local regulations and private property along the route.

Is this panoramic trail dog-friendly?

While many trails in the Parco Regionale dei Monti Lattari are accessible to dogs, this particular route is long and difficult with many steps and potentially crowded sections. If you bring your dog, ensure they are fit for a strenuous hike, are kept on a leash, and that you carry enough water for both of you. Be mindful of hot pavement and rocky terrain that could harm paws.

What are the parking and public transport options for accessing the trailhead in Minori?

Parking in Minori can be challenging, especially during peak season. Limited paid parking may be available in town. For public transport, you can reach Minori by SITA bus from Salerno or Amalfi. The trailhead for the Sentiero dei Limoni typically starts near the town center. Consider using public transport to avoid parking difficulties, especially if you plan to complete the full loop which ends in a different location (Positano) before returning to Minori.

What are the main highlights and viewpoints along the route?

This trail offers numerous stunning views. You'll pass through fragrant lemon groves on the Lemon Trail (Sentiero dei Limoni), offering vistas of the Gulf of Salerno. Other notable highlights include a Stunning View, the View of the Amalfi Coast from Ravello, and the View of the Gulf of Salerno from Via Santa Cosma. You'll also pass through charming towns like Atrani and experience the dramatic coastal panoramas towards Positano.

Does this trail intersect with other well-known paths?

Yes, this extensive loop integrates sections of several local paths. It notably includes about 14% of the Path of the Lemons and also utilizes parts of Via Maestra dei Villaggi, Sentiero basso della Valle delle Ferriere, and Via Vallone, among others, as it winds through the diverse landscapes of the Parco Regionale dei Monti Lattari.

What should I pack for a hike on this trail?

Given the trail's difficulty and length, pack plenty of water (especially in warmer months), high-energy snacks, sturdy hiking shoes, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and a first-aid kit. A map or GPS device (like the Komoot app) is highly recommended, as is a fully charged phone. Trekking poles can be very helpful for the numerous ascents and descents.

Are there places to eat or get refreshments along the way?

The trail passes through several towns like Minori, Atrani, and eventually Positano, where you'll find numerous cafes, restaurants, and shops to refuel. While the Lemon Trail (Sentiero dei Limoni) itself might have fewer options, the larger loop ensures you'll encounter opportunities for refreshments in the villages along the way. Always carry some snacks and water, especially for the longer, more remote sections.

What's an important consideration for the descent into Positano?

The descent into Positano, particularly from higher trails, is known for being very steep and involving a significant number of steps (potentially over 1,800 to 2,500). This can be taxing on the knees and requires careful footing. Take your time, use trekking poles if you have them, and be prepared for a long, gradual descent into the town.

October 10, 2024, 🇮🇹 Stufe um Stufe -Panoramaweg von Maiori nach Amalfi 🍋

Beautiful Amalfi Coast 🥰 We picked out a few places right on the coast and combined them in one hike. What a path, if you can call it that. An estimated 80 percent of this tour consists of steps. Yes, that's right, one staircase nestles lovingly next to the other. Up the mountain, down to the town, through the villages....etc. In combination with over 900 meters of elevation, this was a fitness course for the thighs 😂 But the 👀 also had enough to do and were able to enjoy the beautiful views 🥰 We started in Maiori to the next town, Minori - as described, over thousands (not exaggerated ☝🏻) of steps and stairs up to the "balcony of the Amalfi Coast", Ravello. The next coastal town, Atrani, has already become famous as a film set in the film Equalizer 3. Typical Italian, old, aging buildings with slightly crumbling facades and peeling paint 🇮🇹😉 After a short break and a refreshment in the form of typical Italian food 🍕 we set off on the last leg to Amalfi 🍋. Even at this time of year the place is flooded with tourists 🙄 After a short walk around we then set off in the opposite direction. Unfortunately, the partially different paths did not lead to the hoped-for minimization of the steps 🤷🏻‍♀️ No matter, it was beautiful 😃

Too many stairs, but it's worth it :) . Unfortunately, Amalfi was very crowded and overrun with tourists.

The weather forecast wasn't that great today, but you can also put it positively: finally the citrus fruits were watered extensively. And today we started from Maiori (I cracked the joke a few times that I'm with the Ma(i)oris) via the Sentiero dei Limoni (Lemon Path), Minori, Ravello, Atrani to Amalfi and thus to the Top Instagram locations all over Italy (ok, if the weather is different). In the meantime I killed 2.5 hours in Minori so that the rain stopped at least partially. And I have a lot more pictures, but I've already sorted them out and it's definitely worth coming back when the weather is sunny and the group is small.

Stairs, stairs and stairs. Number of stages not counted. But the views are more than worth it.

Today we walked a very beautiful panoramic route with @Sandra_L. We started in Maiori to first walk the Sentiero dei Limone (lime path). Even people can look at the lime grove in private. At this point we were also given limeade which was very welcome due to the heat. After the path we gradually went higher and higher. Lots of steps but too many steps 🤣. After all those steps in Ravello, we had a nice drink and an ice cream on the terrace. We visited the villages of Maiori, Minori, Ravello and Atraini. The trip was so beautiful, it can easily be expressed in words, what a beautiful region
