Hiking

This difficult 6.1-mile (9.8 km) loop from Dondena offers a rewarding hike with 1630 feet (497 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking 3 hours and 51 minutes to complete. You will traverse varied alpine terrain, from steeper paths with panoramic views to gentler dirt roads, all while passing streams and small waterfalls. The highlight is Lago Misérin, a clear alpine lake nestled among majestic peaks like Rosa dei Banchi, where crystal-clear waters create a magical atmosphere.

To begin your journey, head to the Dondena car park, then cross a stream and walk uphill for 10-15 minutes on a dirt road to reach Rifugio Dondena, the official starting point. The trail provides two main paths to Lago Misérin; one is a simpler dirt road often recommended for the return, while the other is steeper with more challenging sections. Given its hard rating, this hike requires good fitness, sure-footedness, and sturdy shoes. Summer months are ideal for experiencing vibrant alpine flowers and potentially spotting wildlife like marmots.

This entire loop is situated within the Mont Avic Natural Park, Italy's oldest national park, renowned for its pristine natural beauty. A significant landmark you will encounter is the Santuario della Madonna delle Nevi, Europe's highest Marian sanctuary, located right by Lago Misérin. This sanctuary, rebuilt in 1881, holds deep cultural and spiritual importance. You will also pass Rifugio Dondena, a former royal hunting lodge built by King Vittorio Emanuele II, adding a historical dimension to your alpine adventure. The trail is also part of the Alta Via 2, a notable long-distance hiking route in the Aosta Valley.

Dondena Hut

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Located at an altitude of 2,192 meters, the Dondena refuge is a former royal hunting lodge that still retains an original section dating back to the late 19th century.

This refuge is strategically located for high-altitude hikes, as it sits at the crossroads of the trails of the Gran Paradiso National Park, the Mont Avic Regional Park, and the Piedmont valleys. It is easily accessible thanks to its proximity to the municipal dirt road, making it an excellent starting point for hiking.

The trails surrounding the refuge are unpaved, making it a pleasant place to run.
