Gravel riding

The fourth stage of this Collection is totally optional, since it is a circular route that begins and ends in VΓ©lez-Blanco itself. Furthermore, it is almost entirely a route along dirt tracks, with steep slopes and which in some places are not in very good condition. It also does not pass through towns, so you must carry with you everything you need for the day. If you are one of those who like strong emotions also in gravel and your tires have enough grip and width, you can leave your luggage at the accommodation and enjoy the mountain landscape of the Sierra de MarΓa - Los VΓ©lez natural park.

You leave VΓ©lez-Blanco towards the east, with the imposing Muela Grande on the horizon. This rocky plateau of more than 1,460 meters above sea level is located in the Sierra del Gigante. The Route borders the mountain range through the shade of Las Muelas, to continue northwards, towards the Sierra Larga. At kilometer 41 you enter a loop that surrounds the Gabar hill, where there are also caves with rock paintings. This circular is done along wide forest tracks in good condition, but if you want to avoid it, simply continue south, back to VΓ©lez-Blanco.

Back in the town, you can visit its magnificent castle, which combines Gothic and Renaissance architecture and houses a museum of contemporary art. I also recommend visiting the convent of San Luis, and above all, taking a walk through its streets and admiring some of its unique houses, such as the Corredera house or the theater/hermitage of San AgustΓn.

CaΓ±os de Caravaca Fountain

Highlight β€’ Monument

Los CaΓ±os de Caravaca is a public fountain located in VΓ©lez-Blanco. It was commissioned by the Marquis of Los VΓ©lez in the 16th century. It has four water pipes and an ornamentation that dates back to 1944, in which orange and green tiles were placed, and two pictorial scenes: one inspired by a scene from Don Quixote and another from "La Vendimia" by Francisco de Goya, in addition of the shield of the population that presides over the fountain.

RΓo del Alcaide

Highlight β€’ River

The waters that flow down this limestone ravine have pierced and denuded the stone for millennia, leaving an enchanting landscape. Despite the little current that flows down the channel most of the year, the surroundings are full of life. The landscape is very curious.
