Hiking

The landscape of this hike is dominated by the highest mountain in the Vulkaneifel.

With a wonderful view of the volcanic landscape, you start the hike at the hiking car park between Waldkönigen and Hinterweiler. The HeimatSpur takes you past the outskirts of the small Eifel communities of Hinterweiler and Kirchweiler before the imposing Ernstberg - the highest mountain in the Vulkaneifel - catches your eye. Unforgettable panoramas await you! The landscape around the stratovolcano is fascinating with its rugged basalt and lava rocks as well as its old beech forest. Ernstberg

Highlight • Volcano

The almost 700 meters high Ernstberg is not only the highest volcano in the Western Eifel, but also the second highest mountain in the Eifel - only the Hohe Acht is a little higher. The summit is densely forested and offers no view, but still worth a hike up. The mountain slopes are dotted with exciting rock formations that tower out of the forest floor. In combination with the huge beeches here comes a primeval mood.

Around the summit beautiful hiking trails lead through the forest, which are also popular with mountain bike riders.

Trail Reviews

GH
October 11, 2024, HeimatSpur Ernstberg-Panoramaweg

That was a very nice walk around the Ernstberg, the second highest mountain in the Eifel at almost 700 m! From the hiking car park, we first went with two lovely people to a relatively small pit where lava is mined. At the fish pond, where a plastic swan was swimming, we fished diligently for trout. Unfortunately, it started to rain lightly, so the view was no longer so nice. But when we arrived at the Ernstberg, the clouds cleared 🌤️ and soon the sky was again a wonderful spectacle of blue and white. The many mushrooms presented themselves in perfect splendor after the last few rainy days and the moss covering the trees also created a fairytale atmosphere with their rich green. Add to that the enchanted surroundings at the Ernstberg - we simply HAD to stop off at the gingerbread house in Dockweiler at the end 😍😋! This new home track has been in place since January 2024. Started in Kirchweiler at the fire station, therefore about 1km access. The actual start is at the Ernstberg hiking car park between Hinterweiler and Waldkönigen. At 699m, the Ernstberg is the second highest mountain in the Eifel. When there is more snow, there are also ski trails and a ski hut around the Wachtberg. Great tour!

Today was cloudy with lots of wind, a bit of rain, and some sunshine ☀️... on Ernstberg we found two painted stones and explored the caves... but because of the wind, we headed back down to the valley quickly. We saw snowdrops and at least longed for a hint of spring...

Beautiful hike in the best autumn weather. The Ernstberg Panorama Trail lives up to its name. We were able to enjoy great views in clear, sunny weather. The trail leads along wide farm, field and forest paths as well as narrow, rustic single trails up to the Ernstberg. It is the second highest mountain, of volcanic origin, in the Volcanic Eifel. The tour also has a lot to offer botanically. The rock formations of the Ernstberg are another highlight. Some of the trails are also asphalted and stretch a bit, but the panoramic view makes it worth it.

A new home trail that is worth hiking. It does have some wide paths, but they are not in the light with great views. The paths on the circuit are simply fantastic. I tried to hold back on the photos. You can't photograph everything...
