Hiking

This hike begins with a traverse of the chalk hills south of Lewes, following the South Downs Way National Trail before descending into the town and finishing with a riverside ramble on the Sussex Ouse Valley Way. It’s a wonderful introduction to the UK’s newest national park and you can expect big views out to the English Channel on a clear day.

From Southease train station, the route crosses the River Ouse and passes the 12th-century Church of St Peter, with its charming round tower. The gentle ascent onto Swanborough Hill’s broad chalk ridge comes next and the views grow with every upwards step. The patchwork farmland, hedgerows and pockets of woodland stretch for miles, only interspersed by villages and the historic town of Lewes, to the northeast.

One of the main attractions to walking here is the magnificent array of wildflowers during the warmer months and the pollinators that their proliferation brings. Colourful butterfly species abound, including the iconic chalkhill blue, while catching a sight of the rare swallowtail butterfly is a real treat.

Descend from the ridge to the east of Castle Hill, passing Kingston Near Lewes and the pretty Ashcombe Windmill, a 21st-century reconstruction of the original post mill, built in 1826. By the time you reach Lewes, you may be in need of a pitstop and there are plenty of cafes and pubs to choose from on and around the High Street. If you have time, It’s worth exploring the town, with its historic buildings and quirky boutiques.

Eventually, you’ll reach the River Ouse, which is your guide for the remainder of the walk, following the Sussex Ouse Valley Way footpath south, back to Southease. It’s a pleasant way to end this enjoyably varied loop.

St Peter's Church, Southease

Highlight • Historical Site

This pretty little church is one of only three in Sussex with a round tower. The building you see today is essentially the nave of a 12th-century church which has kept its round tower but lost its original chancel and aisles. There are two Norman windows, one blocked, and 13th-century wall paintings inside. The clearest of these paintings is on the west wall and depicts Christ in Majesty.

Ashcombe Windmill

Highlight • Monument

Ashcombe Windmill was restored in 2007 after being destroyed in a storm in 1916, but its owner James Tasker. The six sails are known as 'sweeps' in Sussex.

The windmill was originally built in 1928 and is now used to generate electricity, with the surplus being exported to the grid. This was a planning requirement, stemming from the renewable energy policies of the South Downs National Park.
