Monthermé, there is not much written about it in the Michelin guide, but because the valley of the Semois (or Semoy in France) continues to fascinate me, I want to go hiking there. We take the GR16 towards Bouillon and after about 11km we leave the GR route back to the car. Another enjoyable walk. Just a little terrace in the sun and the weekend is over...
The day began with early morning exercise: 200 meters of elevation in 20 minutes. Up there, from the Seven O'Clock Rock (Roche à sept heures), I was greeted by my first great view of the town of Monthermé in the Ardennes and the Meuse Valley (pronounced "Möse", it's not my fault, that's what it really means, in German "Maas"). Pretty forest paths then led me to the Roc la Tour, which is crowned by three striking rock towers. The paths downhill were almost even more beautiful. The rest of the way back to the Bussle was along the Semois and the Meuse.
Green and wooded hills with dense mixed forest along the Semoy and the Meuse, that's the French Ardennes. Although the peaks are only around 400m high, there are steep and rocky passages. Hiking shoes are highly recommended. Roc-la-Tour is a bizarre rock formation. The rock here is slate. In Monthermé, the Semoy flows into the Maas, shortly after which the Maas forms the well-known Meuse loop.
