The Pietzmoor is located in the Lüneburg Heath, Germany. There are designated parking areas available near the main access points to the moor. For specific directions and parking information, it's best to consult local tourism resources or a navigation app for 'Pietzmoor Parkplatz'.
Yes, the Around Pietzmoor trail is generally considered easy and suitable for all skill levels. The popular circular routes, including this one, feature extensive boardwalks that make the terrain accessible for families and those new to hiking. Some longer routes in the area might be more challenging, but this specific 5.5 km hike is very manageable.
The trail primarily features extensive boardwalks that guide you directly through the heart of the moor, ensuring easy access and protecting the sensitive ecosystem. You'll also encounter forest paths and areas with heather bushes, pines, and birches. While the boardwalks are firm, some areas off the main path can be soft and boggy.
You'll be immersed in a fascinating high moor landscape, characterized by large expanses of water, floating grass islands, and dramatic dead trees. Depending on the season, you might see cotton grass in spring, diverse wildlife like dragonflies and possibly adders in summer, mystical fog in autumn, or a frosty ice landscape in winter. Keep an eye out for typical moor plants like sundew, peat moss, and heather, and with luck, blue moor frogs in spring.
Each season offers a unique experience. Spring is known for the 'sensational' cotton grass blossom and the chance to spot blue moor frogs. Summer brings vibrant wildlife like dragonflies. Autumn is mystical with fog, and winter transforms the landscape into a frosty ice wonderland. The trail is accessible year-round, so the 'best' time depends on what you wish to experience.
While dogs are generally welcome in the Lüneburg Heath, it's crucial to keep them on a leash, especially when hiking through sensitive natural areas like the Pietzmoor. This protects both the delicate ecosystem and local wildlife. Always clean up after your pet.
No, there are typically no permits or entrance fees required to hike the trails around Pietzmoor. The area is a protected natural reserve, and access to the boardwalks and paths is generally free. However, always respect local regulations and signage.
Yes, the trail offers several points of interest. You'll hike directly through the Pietzmoor Raised Bog itself, which is an 8,000-year-old high moor with extensive renaturation efforts. Along the 'Moor Experience Trail' sections, informative educational boards provide insights into the moor's formation, unique flora, and fauna. Near the start/end, you can find the Hotel Schäferhof & Restaurant The Schäferei.
Yes, the Around Pietzmoor trail intersects with several other routes. You'll find sections that overlap with the Heideschleife Pietzmoor, Moorrundweg Pietzmoor, Heide Region Radweg 14, Hohe Heide Radweg, and the Heidschnuckenweg (access path Schneverdingen variant).
Yes, the Around Pietzmoor trail is a circular route. This means you will end your hike at the same point where you started, making it convenient for parking and access.
Yes, near the trail, you can find options for refreshments and accommodation. The Hotel Schäferhof & Restaurant The Schäferei is a highlight located conveniently close to the trail. The nearby town of Schneverdingen also offers various cafes, restaurants, and lodging options.
Despite bad weather, Debby and I went for a walk around the Pietzmoor. The boardwalk was quite slippery in places, but the autumn colours were all the more beautiful. It's worth going for a walk there at any time of year.
During the rain, we visited the One World Church in Schneverdingen, which houses the One Earth Altar with approximately 6,000 Earth books from around the world. Afterward, it was fortunately dry again, and we had the wonderful opportunity to explore the Pietzmoor, surrounded by heathland, clouds, and the evening sun.
Only on the south side in the shallow water of the moor, where the water is warmer, did they show their lovemaking.🥰
The Pietzmoor is always worth a visit, but today we were there at full moon with the moor witch Mathilda. An experience and very adventurous. The moor witch told a lot about the moor and the people who depended on it. It was so cold that parts of the planks were very slippery, like on an ice rink, and of course we were accompanied by the moon, which could always be seen in all its glory.
A very beautiful hike through the Pietzmoor. We parked at the Osterheide parking lot. There are plenty of better parking spaces at the Schäferhof restaurant. Due to time constraints, we only chose the short circular route—there's definitely room for more. It was still very beautiful! Beautiful moorland scenery in great weather! If you walk in our direction, the first part of the circular route leads along a beautiful footbridge.
Unique and beautiful hike on boardwalks through the Pietzmoor. Highly recommended.
In good weather, our last heath loop took us to Pietzmoor on the outskirts of Schneverdingen. We followed the route (see below) and only shortened it a bit. Parking is available right at the beginning of the hiking trail. The proposed route through the moor - which partly led over boardwalks and through a swampy / moorland area - was very varied. The paths are lined with several display and text boards that illustrate both the formation of the moor and its degradation and renaturation very well in recent decades. You can find a lot of things immediately if you look around, then again...
