Gravel riding

The itinerary I propose for gravel bikes is almost entirely on a dirt road. This "high mountain gravel" requires excellent familiarity with the vehicle because you will often find loose and irregular gravel.

I recommend this Tour to those who have adequate physical and technical preparation on high mountain off-road routes; Furthermore, it is important to have enough repair kits, food and water because the areas affected are poorly urbanized.

The departure is from Sestriere, a historic mountain town located at 2,000 meters above sea level. Once you have left the city center, follow the trail towards Col Basset, along the ridge that separates the Susa and Chisone valleys. Without realizing it you are already cycling at high altitude, along the famous Assietta military road, the landscape that surrounds you is typical of the Alps and with a bit of luck you will be able to spot some marmots in the distance, a typical rodent of the area.

The route along the Assietta road is also called "the ride of the two thousand" precisely to indicate that it runs almost entirely at altitudes between 2,000 and 2,600 meters above sea level.

Near the Alpe plain, the descent becomes steeper up to Usseaux, a small and charming Alpine village that has almost entirely been renovated: here you can refuel and rest a bit before continuing the climb towards Sestriere.

Returning to Sestriere, follow the dirt path along the banks of the Chisone stream. Expect some more tears and technical passages! You'll see, this last part will also give you its fair share of adventure!

Highlight • Mountain Pass

Panoramic point where the last descent towards Sestrire della Stada dell'Assietta begins, or where, as in my case, the climb ends to reach altitude and begin the ups and downs between 2300-2500 meters up to the Assietta hill.

Murals of Usseaux

Highlight • Settlement

Usseaux is a small village located in the heart of the Cottian Alps at 1,200 meters above sea level, nestled between two splendid natural areas, the Orsiera-Rocciavrè natural park and the Gran Bosco di Salbertrand natural park.
The village is characterized by numerous historic buildings dating back to the 18th century, many of which have been well restored.
The village was once inhabited by around 2,000 people, today it has just 180.

I forgot to start the tour, there are about 200 meters of elevation gain and 2 km 😅 missing

The dirt climb from Pattemouche to Borgata for at least 50% cannot be pedaled! For the rest, the Assietta tour is always fantastic in good weather ... The overall altitude is almost 1700 meters probably the high pressure has deceived the altimeter and the highest point is Il Genevris at about 2510.

The day of closure to cars would have been yesterday but I tried anyway. All in all the traffic was acceptable, a few motorcyclists and about ten cars/off-road vehicles. It is true that I left early, at 7:45 and at 14:30 I was at the car, the first motorcycles were seen at 10/11. pleasant temperatures up high, light drizzle at Col Basset, from Sestriere I chose the convenient state road to go down and not the dirt road.

Spectacular and panoramic route on one of the most fascinating roads of the western Piedmont Alps

It's been a while since we've been back for the simple classic route from Pourrieres. Short and fast but beautiful as always!

A circular route on the watershed between the Ghisone and Susa valleys. We start from Pourrieres, where the first and most demanding climb starts with a stretch that leads from 1,350 to 1,900 m of altitude: the first 7 km up to Pian dell'Alpe are on asphalt, at the crossroads we turn left towards Colle dell'Assietta (2472 m) on a beautiful panoramic white road where after 16 km from the start you can see the remains of the Gran Serin barracks and the monument dedicated to the Battle of Assietta in 1747. Shortly after you reach the Casa Assietta refuge 2,500 m, for a break, continue where you then reach Cima Genevris (2,511 m). A succession of uphill sections alternating with descents with gradients within 200 m: it takes us to Col Basset, where the descent begins, still on a dirt road that takes us first to Sestriere, then on an asphalt road down to the starting point Pourrieres.

Nice ride, next time it's back on a dirt road along the river.

Beautiful high-alpine gravel road, the Strada dell ‘Assietta! And the best: in July and August, no 🚗 and 🏍 are allowed on Wednesdays and Saturdays. But you are still not alone there. Lots and lots of eMTBs ...
