Trail Reviews

March 19, 2023, Barbarossaweg X8 - Von Gensungen nach Spangenberg (RE-Felsberg-Gensungen - Bus-Spangenberg-ZOB)

Since a project was finished yesterday, I was able to throw in a new one today. The Barbarossaweg X8 goes from Korbach to the Kyffhäuser Monument. So it extends through northern Hesse and Thuringia, which is now reasonable for me from the travel times. So I was able to start in Gensungen this morning at 9:30 am. After going uphill quite a bit at first, Heiligenberg Castle is already erected after 2.5 km. From there you have a really good all-round view, even if this is somewhat blocked in the direction of Habichtswald by the trees. Then it goes on via Hesslar to Melsungen. Here you have a nice view of the Habichtswald at the beginning, but the rest of the way is not quite as spectacular. But something was going on in Melsungen, namely the market crier guild. Since beer was available there, I sat down near Wurst-Achim and then enjoyed the drink. Then it went back out of Melsungen over the Fulda uphill again, out of the valley. The following section again offers quite a few works of art along the way and I found it quite easy to walk up to the detour to the Weltkugel summit. Unfortunately, the last piece in the partly flat forest is a pretty annoying gravel road. In Spangenberg I ordered an ice cream from the Italian and ate it. The bus came just before 5 p.m. Since it will soon be summer time, I have to plan the other stages closer to 30 km, otherwise I'll just be through too early.
