Hiking

Begin your moderate hike at Laghetto del Cavone, a small lake at the base of Corno alle Scale. This 5.5-mile (8.8 km) loop involves a significant 1733 feet (528 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 3 hours and 33 minutes to complete. You'll climb through cool beech forests alongside the Rio Piano stream before the landscape opens up to high-altitude terrain. The path leads to Lago Scaffaiolo, a picturesque high mountain lake, and often includes a traverse along the Apennine ridge, offering sweeping 360-degree views of surrounding peaks like Monte Cimone. You might even spot meadows of crocuses after the snow melts.

To start, you can drive to Laghetto del Cavone, where parking is available. A refuge and ski lifts are also present, with the lifts offering an option to shorten the initial climb during summer. This trail can be popular, especially on weekends, so plan accordingly. Remember to bring plenty of water, particularly on sunny days, as tree cover can be scarce in parts. Good fitness and sure-footedness are essential for this route, especially on exposed sections like the "Balzi dell'Ora."

This loop offers more than just scenic beauty; it's rich in history and unique features. Lago Scaffaiolo, located at 1,785 meters, is one of the best-known lakes in the Emilian Apennines, even mentioned by Boccaccio in 1373. The historic Rifugio Duca degli Abruzzi, inaugurated in 1878, stands by its shores, providing a welcome spot for rest and food. On clear days, the panoramic views from the ridge can extend to the Alpine arc, Corsica, and the Tuscan archipelago, with the crest path marking the natural boundary between Tuscany and Emilia Romagna.

Rio Piano Valley

Highlight • Trail

Beautiful path (also suitable for families with children) which offers a spectacular view of the Corno. In early summer 2021, the trail was partially damaged by a landslide, although it remained passable.

The summit of Corno alle Scale (1945 m) can be reached via a path on the ridge. The view is incredible: you can see the Alpine arc to the north, part of Corsica and the Tuscan archipelago to the south-west, up to the Apuan Alps, and the Apennine arc and Mount January to the east.

Passo dello Strofinatoio

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The Passo dello Strofinatoio separates Monte Cornaccio from the southern ridge of Corno alle Scale. Some archaeologists argue that Hannibal could have passed through here during the Second Punic War, to descend into Etruria.

Passo dei Tre Termini

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The ancient border between the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, the Duchy of Modena and the Papal State is marked here by a stone with the date 1793. Today it is the border between Pistoia, Modena and Bologna and a crossroads of paths.

The planned route should have started from Madonna dell'Acero, but yesterday I had to park at "Poggiolforato" ... then who was taking us back to Bologna?

📍Starting from the Cavone refuge parking lot. 🥾 First part of the path in the woods, then we continue following the signs for the Corneta alp (which climbs more gently) finally we head towards Punta Sofia. From here we then proceed along the ridge to Lake Scaffaiolo. We made a small deviziano climbing Mount Cupolino. Descent along a comfortable dirt road that goes under the Duca degli Abruzzi refuge to the parking lot.

Circular tour starting from Laghetto del Cavone. Go up the Valle del Silenzio to Passo del Vallone and from there continue along the crest, crossing the Balzi dell'Ora in the last stretch (not recommended for those who are not expert or suffer from vertigo). Peak of Corno alle Scale with its imposing cross. Continue along the crest, going up the peak of Monte Cupolino which overlooks Lake Scaffaiolo and the Rif. Duca degli Abruzzi. Descent towards the lake, then returning to the starting point by a very wide and comfortable path. Classic tour of this beautiful part of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines.
