The Aachen-Liège cycle route follows the disused railway lines 39/38 and is part of the so-called RAVeL route network (Réseau Autonome des Voies Lentes) of the Walloon region. Not only cyclists, but also pedestrians are on the route - considerate cooperation is a prerequisite for a successful journey. You start in Aachen and drive through the Westpark out of town. Curvy you climb the Vaalserberg, three-country point and the highest mountain in the Netherlands.
Now on Belgian soil, let it roll down to Plombières on the RAVeL route. Along the way, railway relics tell of the active times of passenger and freight traffic, which has been shut down since 1986. You can marvel at the former station building in Hombourg and in Aubel a discarded locomotive greets you. Gently up and down you follow the railway cycle path through the colorful cultural landscape. Small businesses that produce syrup, cheese or cider invite you to taste them. In the old Herve train station building there is a shop with regional products and the tourist information.
You pass tunnels, bridges, a viaduct and enjoy wonderful views over the "superbe région de bocage", as the Herve region calls itself. Passing the mining dumps of Retinne and Michroux, you descend into the valley - the Weser and Ourthe lead you to the Meuse, where Liège welcomes you. The spectacular train station by the Spanish architect Calatrava, the Gare Liège-Guillemins, is a real highlight. There you start your journey home after a worthwhile stroll through the city.

L38 = from Hombourg to Liège, now tarred throughout, not just from Battice/Herve
Showing Translation
Smoothly tarred all the way! 😉
Up to Herve also super scenic. After that, the industrial past of the Liège area cannot be overlooked 😉
Downtown is nice too, we'll explore further now!
