Goriaux Pond

Highlight • Lake

Nice spot, possibility to land, soak your feet in the water. Not far from the Arenberg gap. Accessible slag heap along the Mate in Goriaux which gives a view from above. Be careful, very narrow and sloping path if you want to go along the pond on the slag side.

Trail Reviews

Ingo 🏃🚴🥾 🕊
August 2, 2025, Die Mare à Goriaux 🇫🇷 - Rundweg ab Bellaing im Regionalen Naturpark Scarpe-Escaut

On our way to Normandy – a two-week family vacation – we made a stopover in northern France. We stayed overnight at the Novotel near the highway, then drove 15 minutes north in the morning. The reason: the dog needs a walk. Early. So I set off alone with our Labrador. The rest of the family, as always, didn't understand the idea of a 6:30 a.m. walk. Our destination was the Réserve biologique de la Mare à Goriaux – a former open-pit mine, now a nature reserve. A lake formed by subsidence. Protected since 1982. Around 300 bird species, plenty of peace and quiet, and dense forest. The walk: approximately 6.5 km, easily walkable, alternating between forest and riverside paths. The highlight was the climb up the Terril – a spoil heap with a surprisingly expansive view over the lake and the landscape. 🌿 Quick facts about the location: – Biological reserve in the Raismes-Saint-Amand-Wallers Forest – 90-hectare lake, a refuge for many bird species – Part of a cross-border nature reserve (France/Belgium) – Circular trail with a gentle climb and viewpoint It was supposed to rain – but in the end, it only drizzled. Perfect conditions for a quiet, invigorating ride before continuing west. 5-6 hours to go.
