Hikers generally take between 4.5 to 5.5 hours to complete this loop, not including any stops. This duration is for the 12.7 km route with moderate difficulty.
The trail offers diverse terrain, transitioning from dense woodlands with hazel, oak, and chestnut trees to open prairies and wetlands. You'll encounter both natural tracks and some paved sections, with varying ground conditions that can include mud. The geological makeup features 'green rocks' (ophiolites), creating a rugged landscape. Appropriate footwear is highly recommended.
The route is rich in natural beauty and historical significance. You'll pass the Gorzente Ice Pit, the Bridge over Lago Lungo and Lake Bruno, and enjoy panoramic views from Bric Lagolungo. Other notable features include ancient ice houses, the historic Pietra del Grano, and the Bric di Guana Hut, which serves as a natural observatory and emergency shelter.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, as part of the Piedmontese section falls within the Parco Naturale delle Capanne di Marcarolo, it's advisable to keep dogs on a leash to protect the local wildlife and ensure their safety, especially in areas with diverse biodiversity.
The trail can be enjoyed in various seasons, but spring and autumn are often ideal due to milder temperatures and vibrant foliage. Summer can be pleasant, but be prepared for warmer weather. Winter hikes are possible but may require appropriate gear for potentially muddy or icy conditions.
While specific parking locations are not detailed, the trail is accessible, and parking is generally available near common starting points for hikes in the Parco Naturale delle Capanne di Marcarolo. It's recommended to check local signage or park information upon arrival.
No, there are typically no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike this trail or to access the Parco Naturale delle Capanne di Marcarolo. The park aims to safeguard biodiversity and offers free access to its natural beauty. However, always respect park regulations and leave no trace.
Yes, the route intersects with several other trails. Notably, it covers 100% of the Sentiero naturalistico dei Laghi del Gorzente. It also passes through significant sections of the Colla di Praglia - Passo della Bocchetta (36%), Sentiero Liguria - Tappa 13 Variante 2 (36%), and Sentiero europeo E1 - Variante di Pegli (36%).
The area is known for its unique biodiversity, especially in the wetlands where you might spot insectivorous plants like sundew and butterwort. The diverse habitats also support various bird species and other small wildlife. The Piedmontese section is part of the Capanne di Marcarolo Natural Park, established to protect this rich ecosystem.
Yes, you'll find the Bric di Guana Hut (Natural Observatory of Laghi del Gorzente “Damiano Barabino”) which serves as a resting point and offers natural exhibits, as well as an emergency shelter. Additionally, the Fontana dei Segaggin provides a water source.
The trail is classified as moderate difficulty. While it doesn't require advanced hiking skills, it does involve an elevation gain of over 400 meters and includes uneven paths, so a good level of fitness and sure-footedness are recommended. It's not typically considered a beginner-level hike due to its length and elevation.
Nice loop with the first part in a humid area, with streams and waterfalls. Great views, large spaces.
Very naturalistic beauty, well-marked path, medium commitment for development, some streams to pass without bridges, large car park, entirely paved road
I forgot to start the Garmin at the start, missing a few km
Circular tour around the Gorzente lakes on the well-marked nature trail. Incredible environment with sections that alternate between woods and more typically mountain paths. Throughout the tour we met two people towards the end who were following the Alta via dei Monti Liguri. One might say Trentino is a stone's throw from home... 🤩
