This adventure trail offers you exciting insights into the life of the European wildcat at ten stations. You hike along the wild Riefenbachtal through partly beautiful deciduous forests and forest habitats near Bad Harzburg that are in an exciting state of change. The tour ends at the wildcat enclosure at the Marienteichbaude, where you will be rewarded by the sight of real European wildcats!

You can find further information about the WILDKATZEN forest experience here: https://www.bund-niedersachsen.de/ueber-uns/bund-projekte/aktuelle-projekte/rettungsnetz-wildkatze/mehr-erfahr/wildkatzen-erlebnispfad/

The chances of you encountering a real wild cat are very small. But if it does happen, be careful! Be sure to leave gray tabby kittens in the forest! We give you tips on how you should behave: www.bund.net/vorsicht-wildkatze

Wildcat Hideout

Highlight • Trail

The European wildcat prefers untidy forests. She feels at home where fallen trees and root plates remain and tree cavities can be found. Here she finds enough hiding places for herself and her young.

The Wildkatzen Erlebnispfad leads you along the Riefenbach through the beautiful Harzburg Forest. On the way you walk past ten stations that take you into the life of the European wildcat. Have fun!

Log piles as wildcat hideouts

Highlight • Structure

When cats hide...

The European wildcat prefers untidy forests. She feels at home where fallen trees and root plates remain and tree cavities can be found. But she also likes so-called Holzpolter, the stacks of felled tree trunks. There she happily gives birth to her young and raises them.

However, when the piles of wood are removed, it is life-threatening for the animals. Again and again it happens that the wild kittens are crushed or loaded with them.
To prevent this from happening, BUND recommends not clearing away piles in wildcat forests from March to August (during the main time when wildcats are born and reared). Other options are storage at a central storage location outside the forest or immediate removal.

A trip here is totally worth it, there are feedings and lots of information about the wild cats three times a day (except Mondays). And just because of Hugo (the house cat), a visit here is recommended.

Since it was around 30 degrees again today, we did the summer variant and took the bus up the mountain. The tour only got really nice on the last 2 kilometers, as a secluded path led along the stream. The rest was just a shadowless gravel road, not what you imagine a climb to be.

The first 3.5 km are beautiful. It goes through the middle of the forest past a stream. Then it's only on forest roads through deforested landscape. The wild cat enclosure is worth a visit again

Great tour in glorious sunshine 🌞😎. The time is not right and there was no GPS contact
