Mountain biking

This circular tour leads across the national border to Italy and is packed with varied paths and highlights. From Nauders, the route initially heads south-east on gravel and asphalt. The section along the Piengbach is steep before you roll down to the interface with the Bergkastel trail. It goes parallel to the trail on a forest path uphill again until you reach the Stieralm.

After a first stop, you continue to the Italian border, where you pass the protected Plamorter Moos. The old barracks ruins and especially the anti-tank barrier look slightly surreal in the idyllic mountain scenery. From the Plamortboden you also have an impressive view of Lake Resia, to which you immediately jet down.

Curvy and sometimes steep it goes down to the lake shore near Arlund. The last section of this round is very relaxed: first on the lakeside path to Reschen and then on the paved Via Claudia cycle path over the well-known Reschenpass back to Austria. Finally, in Nauders, there are a variety of rest stops waiting for you.

Stieralm

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The Stieralm offers a great opportunity to take a break on the way to the Plamort or Bunker Trail and lets you recharge your batteries if you want to jet down the Bergkastel Trail.

The hut is operated by Nauderer Bergbahnen AG. You can find information about opening hours on the website of the TVB. Unfortunately, it is not possible to stay overnight unless you bring your sleeping bag and spend the night on the terrace under the starry sky. ;)

National border

Highlight • Monument

The Austrian-Italian border is marked up here by a fence. As a border crossing is a gap in the fence, which is provided with a wooden bridge - probably so no cows over the border run. Anyway, it's fun to drive over it.

Plamort Anti-tank Barriers

Highlight • Monument

The anti-tank barrier at Plamort is part of the Vallo Alpino (Alpine Wall). The line of fortifications were built between the 1920s and 1942 but were never fully completed. It was intended to secure the border regions to France, Yugoslavia, Switzerland and also the future ally – the German Reich. The relationship between the two fascist states of Mussolini and Hitler was not based on close trust. For this reason, between 1938 and 1942, the construction of the border fortifications of the Alpenwall in South Tyrol was promoted. This also includes the system at the Reschenpass and Plamort.

Construction was stopped only on October 4, 1942, after Hitler had announced to his buddy Mussolini at the Brenner station that he would respect the borders of South Tyrol and that it would remain Italian. In 1943 Mussolini was deposed and an armistice was declared towards the Allies. After the subsequent declaration of war on the German Reich, the Wehrmacht marched into South Tyrol. The fully functional system of anti-tank obstacles, bunkers, roads for supplies and command posts at Plamort was handed over without a fight.

A support association offers interested visitors guided tours through the labyrinths of military installations and the museum in the Etschquelle bunker no. 20. Information is available here: vinschgau.net/de/service-info/aktuelles/alle-veranstaltungen.html?eventid=d4deff3b2b624c489b97884f29bb294d.

For us it was a long-awaited goal of our Alpine crossing. You know what you've achieved, because after that it'll go downhill as a reward !!!

Trail Reviews

Peter R.
September 18, 2025, Plamortrunde

A fantastic loop over the incredible Plamort Plain. A 700-meter gravel climb to the magnificent Stieralm. A quick drink stop, then the Plamort Trail. A historic adventure with tank traps, bunkers, and a fantastic view over Lake Reschen to the Ortler. A truly fantastic biking experience. Finally, a photo stop at the Grauner Tower and then off to Nauders for coffee and cake...

Directly in Nauders there is a steep climb up to the church. Now we continue steadily uphill to the Stieralm. In some cases, according to Komoot, up to 18%. Once there, anyone who wants to can take a break. From here the 3 countries Enduro Trails are also signposted. On my tour I will drive part of it to Zum Plamort. Everything up to this point was gravel. Behind the Panzerwall you will be rewarded with an overwhelming view of the Reckoning Lake. From here it goes steadily downhill along a gravel path to the Lachen lake and the church in Graun. There I recommend the “Café zum Turm” on the left. Now it's a relaxed journey back to Nauders.

Great tour with a pleasant shady uphill, which is highly recommended at these temperatures. Good food on the Stierenalp 😋 to take the downhill under the wheels after the magnificent view. Well, I couldn't drive everything, too many stimuli one after the other😵‍💫, but it was still a lot of fun😁. And at any time you can leave the trail and take the easier route. But as you know, you grow with challenges (so do we 😆). Everywhere people are friendly, nice and in a good mood, which increases our joy 😁

3 countries Enduro Trails, bike opening. Almtrail over the Plamort Trail to the tank barriers. Bunker Trail/Etsch Trail to Lake Reschen, which currently has no water. Back to Nauders and up again with the Bergkastel cable car. The way down is via the Bergkastel Trail.

We were so lucky with the weather 😎☀️. Unfortunately it was already quite cold and the snow line was very low for the time of year. Many thanks to BH-Bikes and Moustache-Bikes, who provided enough eBikes.
