Trail Reviews

August 15, 2024, Hailes Abbey

This walk passes evidence of the turmoil of religious changes. Hailes church, at the start of this walk, has medieval wall paintings, most pale, some vivid. The Malverns can be seen from the way up to Stump Cross with the hills of the Forest of Dean beyond. The stone monument is to Thomas Cromwell and the dissolution of the monasteries. Farmcote church has altar rails of the type decreed by Archbishop Laud in the 17th century. His changes to worship were a factor in starting the English Civil War.
