Start 🅿️ Beukenlaan A beautiful walk just below Nijmegen - Heumensoord. Unfortunately, the rhododendrons had already finished blooming and the heather was not yet in bloom. You cannot see all seasons at the same time. Still a very beautiful walk through the forests of Heumensoord. Not back on the 🅿️ in time for the heavy rain shower. About the Heumensoord area Near Nijmegen you will find Heumensoord, a nature reserve with old beech avenues and enormous rhododendrons. Take a quiet walk in the forest, grab your bike or go for a run. In short, a wonderful place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. If you follow the marked walking routes during your walk, you will automatically come to a very striking open space in the forest. At this spot you can see the remains of a Roman guard post from the 3rd century. In the past, the Roman highway from Maastricht to Nijmegen was located here. But now you can experience the peace of nature here. Source/info: https://www.natuurmonumenten.nl/natuurgebieden/heumensoord Tips from other KOMOOT users Rhododendrons In this northern part of the old estate, you can still find Rhododendron groves here and there Tip from Annemieke Vogel Water pool In the middle of the nature of the Heumensood lies this idyllic pond. Rest here for a while during your walk and see what kind of animals you see near the water. Tip from Marieke Duchatteau Roman watchtower A Roman watchtower used to stand where you are now. This building from the third century was part of a chain along the imperial border and was used to quickly transmit messages using torches and flags. Today, the remains and the protected archaeological site invite you to experience Roman history up close. Tip from Zoe von Rambling Rocks Cross as a target for military exercises On the hill you can see the striking cross, which used to serve as a target for military exercises. Today it still stands, as a silent witness to times gone by. From the crossroads below, sandy paths lead in all directions, inviting you to explore the area. A place where history and nature come together and invite you to go on a journey of discovery. Tip from Zoe von Rambling Rocks Fun nature playground for children Playground that is best suited for children from about 4 to 12 years old. And it is fun to watch the children discover and play.
