Riverside Park, Southampton

Highlight • Viewpoint

Southampton's Riverside Park is a sprawling recreation area that hugs the eastern bank of the River Itchen. It's 32 acres (12.9 ha) includes football pitches, play areas and cricket pitches; it's perfect for families.

So close to numerous suburbs, the park is popular with locals to get out and enjoy nature. The Itchen is a particularly vibrant river and is home to plenty of wildlife. Birdlife is abundant in the area so keep an eye out and you might spot kingfishers, herons and plenty more.

Woodmill on the River Itchen

Highlight • Structure

A mill has stood on this site for hundreds of years and Woodmill itself was built in the mid-1800s after a fire destroyed the previous iteration. Working as a flour mill, it finally ceased operation in the 1950s and is an activity centre today, offering watersports.

Occupying a peaceful stretch of the Itchen, next to a weir, the mill also makes the place where the tidal effect on the Itchen ceases. Above the mill, the Itchen is freshwater.
