Discover some of the finest roads in West Sussex, exploring the hilly yet scenic terrain as you make your way to the historic city of Chichester on the south coast.
Starting at Chichester station, your journey begins along the Centurion Way, a fantastic, disused railway path that now serves as a popular cycling route connecting Chichester and West Dean. Exiting the Centurion Way at Hunters Race, you'll pass an eye-catching set of steel sculptures depicting Roman centurions.
Venture westward through the villages of West Stoke and Funtington before climbing around the outskirts of Kingley Vale. This national nature reserve has one of Europe's most impressive yew forests.
Pedal along Wildham Lane, a lovely narrow road passing through the hamlets of Walderton and Stoughton, each boasting its own inviting country pub. Climb through Wildham Woods to the village of East Marden, where an unusual thatched well graces the village green.
Descend into the village of West Dean via a straight, tree-lined avenue on Warren Down, offering a halfway point with a pub and village shop featuring its own café. You’ll reconnect with the Centurion Way at West Dean for a brief section to Lavant, then embark on a steep climb past the renowned Goodwood Racecourse.
Whizz down into Charlton then East Dean, two more villages offering a welcoming country pub each. Brace yourself for a steep ascent up East Dean Hill, followed by Selhurst Park Road, treating you to a breathtaking vista all the way to the English Channel.
Descend to the village of Eartham before making your way back to Chichester through the flat outskirts of town.
Chichester station provides connections to London, Brighton, Portsmouth and Southampton. There’s limited parking in Chichester, so consider starting your adventure in Tangmere, if you choose to drive. You can park for free in Church Lane.
