View of Mapleton from the River Dove

Highlight • River

Mapleton is a pretty Derbyshire village just south of the Peak District National Park. It's close to the River Dove and makes a nice loop from Ashbourne if you walk out along the Tissington Trail, through Dovedale and back past Mapleton over the fields.

Ilam Park Tea Room

Highlight • Rest Area

The National Trust tearoom at Ilam Park has plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Stop and grab a scone, coffee, ice cream or a light meal and then continue with your walk. The staff are friendly, and the cafe is reassuringly NT.
Open 10:00 - 17:00 every day.

Ilam Hall

Highlight • Historical Site

Ilam Hall stands at the centre of the Ilam Park Estate. Built in the 16th century the hall was owned by the Port family for over 200 years. It was sold in 1809 and then rebuilt between 1821 and 1826. It fell into disrepair and was partially demolished before being saved by Sir Robert McDougal in 1930. He gave it to the National Trust but requested that a section was used as a youth hostel.
Today you can stay at the hostel or visit the NT managed house and estate. There is a nice cafe on site and lots of great walks start here.

Church of the Holy Cross, Ilam

Highlight • Historical Site

This church, which is dedicated to the Holy Cross (Latin "Santa Croce"), takes its patronage from the cross on which Jesus Christ died. The veneration of the Holy Cross goes back in large part to Saint Helena, who was the mother of Emperor Constantine the Great (who recognized Christianity as a religion after his victory at the "Milvian Bridge" in front of Rome and ended the long period of persecution with the "Edict of Toleration" of Milan in 312). In the early fourth century, she made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land (Israel / Palestine) and brought numerous relics back to Europe, including the "True Cross" on which Jesus Christ was crucified. Helena is therefore often depicted with a cross as an attribute.
The church celebrates the feast of the discovery, public presentation and veneration of the Holy Cross - called the "Exaltation of the Cross" - on September 14th.

Ilam Cross

Highlight • Historical Site

If you visit Ilam then you can't miss its landmark... The Ilam Cross. It stands on a 3 step plinth in the centre of a roundabout in the village and is Grade II listed. It is a memorial cross for the wife of Jesse Watts-Russell, Mary, consisting of two tiers of statues surmounted by a spire with a cross on the top. Made from local limestone in an ornate gothic-style design this landmark was refurbished in 2011.

Thorpe Cloud

Highlight • Climb

Thorpe Cloud rises proudly from Dovedale and affords breathtaking views over the River Dove, Bunster Hill, Ilam and beyond. It has a distinctive conical shape and is a popular summit for hikers in the area. That said, it can get extremely busy up here so choose your moment to climb it.
