The trail begins in the settlement of Piamprato. While specific parking details for this exact trailhead are not provided, it's common for villages in national parks to have designated parking areas. We recommend checking local signage upon arrival or consulting the Gran Paradiso National Park visitor information for the most up-to-date parking options.

Along this stage, you'll encounter several notable points. Highlights include the starting point of Piamprato, a stunning View of Alpe Prariod and Grange Ciavanassa, and the mountain pass known as Borra Pass. You'll also pass by the huts of Grangia Vandilliana and Grangia della Borra.
Given that this stage is located in an alpine environment within the Gran Paradiso National Park, the best time to hike is typically during the late spring, summer, and early autumn months (roughly June to September). During these periods, snow has usually melted, and weather conditions are generally more stable, making for safer and more enjoyable hiking.
As this trail is located within the Gran Paradiso National Park, specific regulations regarding dogs apply. Generally, dogs are permitted on trails in national parks but often require a leash to protect wildlife and ensure the safety of all visitors. It's always best to check the official Gran Paradiso National Park website for their most current pet policies before your visit.
Hiking on trails within Gran Paradiso National Park typically does not require a specific hiking permit or entrance fee for general access. However, visitors are expected to respect park regulations, which include rules on waste, wildlife interaction, and camping. Yes, while this route is primarily the Sentiero Italia - Tappa E39A, it also briefly intersects with sections of the Sentiero Italia - Tappa E39B, GTA: Le Fondo - Piamprato, and GTA: Piamprato - Ronco Canavese.
For a difficult hike with significant elevation changes, it's crucial to be well-prepared. We recommend sturdy hiking boots, layered clothing suitable for changing alpine weather, rain gear, plenty of water, high-energy snacks, a map and compass or GPS device, and a first-aid kit. Trekking poles can also be very helpful on steep sections.
Yes, you will pass by two huts on this stage: Grangia Vandilliana and Grangia della Borra. These can offer a place for a rest or shelter, but it's advisable to check their operating status if you plan to rely on them for services.
We started bright and early - and it was so cold and so foggy. We spotted mountain goats in the distance. The way to piamprato was easy to follow and we were very grateful for recent maintainance work on part of the trail. Due to the fog/clouds, we unfortunately did not enjoy much of a view. We left at 7ish and arrived at 13- just in time for lunch.
