As described on walkhighlands.co.uk, Big Burn walk is Golspie's hidden gem: "a spectacular short walk up a gorge criss-crossed by footbridges and ending in a waterfall". The Skating Pond and its surroundings on the way back are another highlight. Enjoy :-)
Route to the waterfall is closed due to storm damage.
Everything repeats itself 😄 - while waiting for Dunrobin Castle to open today, we made another completely unexpected discovery. In Golspie, there's the Big Burn Walk, which starts at a small parking lot at the edge of the village and, after a few steps, leads into a scenic paradise. Lush green, vigorous trees alternate with ancient, gnarled, lichen-covered trees. White wild garlic, purple bluebells, and yellow gorse bloom along the path in a magnificent setting. All this idyll is accompanied by a merrily babbling brook. As if that weren't enough of a splendor, you walk through a small gorge, see thin threads of water trickling from the rocks, made of dark green moss, and suddenly find yourself in front of a waterfall that cascades foaming into a round rock pool. And instead of rushing our short hike to get to the castle, we took our time and thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful morning walk. It's especially in places like these that you quickly strike up conversations with like-minded enthusiasts. One, upon seeing me photographing the lichens, told me that all lichens in Great Britain are protected and shouldn't be destroyed, that there are over 1,000 species here, and where I could find even more beautiful ones. Insight of the day: This little paradise 🏞️ was my highlight of the day! 🥰 👩👦🏼
Great short walk to the Big Burn waterfall. Not to be missed.
