This moderate loop trail usually takes about 3 hours and 43 minutes to complete. This duration is for the full 13.8 km (8.6 miles) route.
The trail is classified as moderate. It requires good fitness but features mostly accessible paths. According to the SAC scale, it's rated 2-3, meaning sure-footedness is generally required.
The terrain is quite varied. You'll encounter sections of paved (5.58 km), unpaved (1.86 km), and asphalt (1.50 km) surfaces, along with some portions where the surface type is not specified.
You'll discover several notable sites. These include the ancient Grande Ciccio Ancient Olive Tree, the historic Masseria Termetrio, and the scenic Monte Le Fergole. A significant highlight is also the Sanctuary of the Madonna d'Ibernia, a religious site with deep local traditions.
Yes, from Monte Le Fergole, situated at about 350 meters above sea level, you can enjoy panoramic views of the picturesque Valle d'Itria and its distinctive *trulli*.
While the trail is generally accessible, specific leash rules or restrictions for dogs are not detailed. It's always advisable to keep your dog on a leash, especially around historical sites and in areas where wildlife might be present.
The trail can be enjoyed throughout much of the year, but spring and autumn typically offer the most pleasant temperatures for hiking in Apulia, avoiding the intense summer heat.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Monte Le Fergole and Santuario Madonna d'Ibernia loop.
The loop starts from Cisternino. While specific parking areas are not detailed, you would typically look for parking within Cisternino or near the start of the trail, such as close to the Santuario Madonna d'Ibernia.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Anello d'oro di Puglia (Variante 2V), Via Ellenica - Terra degli Ulivi (Tappa 4), and Monte Castagna.
Given its moderate difficulty and varied terrain, the trail is suitable for those with good fitness. While some sections are easily accessible, the overall length and varied surfaces might be challenging for very young children or absolute beginners. However, it's generally considered suitable for all skill levels with adequate preparation.
Not recommended! Part of the path near Masseria Termetrio is now (Apr 2024) completely overgrown, impassable and difficult to find a way round. Then after waymark 7 the route takes you up what they call a hiking path but is actually a very steep and rough break in the trees just to bring you back down to the forest path after a short distance. Better to carry on the forest path after 7 and rejoin the route after waymark 10
