Dive into the eventful history of the Lochem area!
This prehistoric route starts and ends in the Gelderland town of Lochem and covers a distance of 59 kilometers. During this trip you will discover the traces of a rich history, while enjoying the beautiful landscape of the Achterhoek.
Characteristic of the landscape is the Berkel, a prehistoric river that flows near Lochem. Once this river was up to 10 kilometers wide and was visited by majestic rhinoceroses who drank its water. The presence of the Berkel also determined the settlement of the first inhabitants on small islands, safely away from the water. The farmers who after 3400 BC. arrived, planted fields on the high banks and grazed their cattle on the lower grounds.
As you cycle, you will witness the historical development of Lochem. In the 14th century Lochem grew into a city with market rights, city gates and a double canal, fed by the Berkel. Admire the characteristic Molen Zwiep, a beautiful traditional flour mill that you will encounter along the way. Enjoy the peace and beauty of the area as you continue cycling.
A highlight of the route is the striking watchtower called Belvedère. Located on the Lochemse Berg, a hilly area that is part of the Northeast Twente National Landscape Park, the Belvedere tower offers a panoramic view of the breathtaking landscape. Climb the approximately 30 meter high tower and be enchanted by the magnificent view of the vast forests, rolling hills and farmlands of the Achterhoek.
End your prehistoric cycling tour with a visit to Kasteel Ampsen, a 17th-century castle. For example, get off to take a walk on the beautiful estate.
This prehistoric route around Lochem offers a unique opportunity to go back in time and discover the traces of a rich history. In Lochem you can reminisce at one of the many catering establishments. Good news: Lochem has a train station, so you can easily take your bike with you. You will also find plenty of parking space around the station.
