Hiking

Embark on a rewarding hike through the Peak District National Park with the Mam Tor, Lose Hill & Hope loop from Castleton. This moderate route covers 8.3 miles (13.3 km) with an elevation gain of 1336 feet (407 metres), typically taking around 3 hours and 57 minutes to complete. You will experience varied terrain, from well-paved paths to steeper, rocky sections, especially on the descent from Back Tor, as you traverse the iconic Great Ridge connecting Mam Tor and Lose Hill.

Starting from the charming village of Castleton, this trail is very popular, particularly on weekends. An early start is recommended if you prefer a quieter experience. Always check the weather forecast before you go, as conditions on the ridge can be cold and windy even when Castleton is sheltered, so sturdy shoes and appropriate gear are essential for your comfort and safety.

The trail offers expansive views of the Hope and Edale Valleys, with Mam Tor, known as the "Shivering Mountain," providing panoramic vistas that can reach Manchester on clear days. Lose Hill offers equally impressive views, often with fewer crowds. You will also see natural landmarks like Winnats Pass and Peak Cavern, and may even spot paragliders near Mam Tor's summit on windy days, adding to the scenic experience.

View of Winnats Pass

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

A lovely stretch of footpath just outside Castleton. Walking through buttercup fields you get fantastic views of Winnats Pass and Peak Cavern.
With unmarked paths and plenty of wooden stiles this reminds me strongly of JRR Tolkien’s ‘Middle Earth’.

Walking along this road reminds you just how fickle human construction is in comparison to the strength of Mother Nature.

Mam Tor is often called 'the Shivering Mountain' as its loose shale often causes landslides. After a series of intense landslides in 1912, 1933, 1946, 1952 and 1966; in 1979 a particularly bad slip caused the troubled Mam Tor road to close permanently.

Mam Tor

Highlight • Summit

Mam Tor is a breathtaking summit with enchanting views over the Peak District. In clear conditions, the views stretch all the way to Manchester. There are so many options when hiking in this area, too. It can get busy, though, so choose your moment.

Back Tor (Great Ridge)

Highlight • Summit

This ridge is very wide in comparison to the famous ridges across the UK, just beware on a gusty day if heading up the west to east on Back Tor as it's a big drop. The views are great on a clear day.

Lose Hill Summit

Highlight • Viewpoint

Lose Hill is situated at the end of Great Ridge and provides breathtaking views over Mam Tor, as well as the Hope and Edale valleys. Despite its proximity to Mam Tor, it often has fewer visitors, meaning you can enjoy a little more tranquillity here.

Trail Reviews

Tim Hardman
March 8, 2025, Mam Tor & Lose Hill loop from Hope — Peak District National Park

I can see why this is a popular route because it has the most amazing views and great paths. This is an easy hike in good weather 👍

We embarked on a hike from Hope to Mam Tor via Lose Hill in the picturesque Peak District. The hike was both modesty challenging, but extremely rewarding. Starting in Hope, we followed the trail that led us to Lose Hill. The ascent was steep at times, but the panoramic views from the summit were breathtaking. Continuing on to Mam Tor, we encountered a diverse landscape at times, from rolling hills to rocky paths. The entire hike provided a great opportunity to appreciate the natural beauty and rich history of the Peak District.

Haha! Yes @Deleted User not quite snowing today but certainly cooler than home! C'est la vie 🙂
