Delve into the peat history of Weerribben-Wieden National Park on this 14-kilometre walk. Let yourself be carried away along old peat workers' houses, the De Wicher polder mill and the atmospheric Tjasker mill.
Weerribben-Wieden National Park, located in Overijssel, is known for its extensive peat bogs and wetland landscapes. Over the centuries, the landscape underwent major changes due to human activities, including dyke construction and peat extraction. Peat was dredged in long strips, forming laying fields to dry the peat. Peat extraction remained important to the region until 1920.
During the walk you will always come across the remains of the peat extraction that have shaped the landscape. You will come across old peat workers' houses, where the peat cutters used to live and work. Let your imagination run wild as you imagine what life was like here in days gone by.
A highlight of the walk is the De Wicher polder mill. This impressive mill is a reminder of the battle against the water and was used to regulate the water level in the peat area. It is a wonderful example of the technical feats applied in the management of the landscape during peat extraction.
Another special mill that you encounter during the walk is the Tjasker mill. This charming mill, also known as a tjasker, was used to check the water level in the nature reserves.
In addition to exploring the historical sights, this walk also offers the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of Weerribben-Wieden National Park. The area is known for its varied vegetation, vast lakes and narrow waterways. Don't forget to bring your binoculars, as you can see a wide variety of birds and other animals here.
How do you reach the start and end point of the walk? You can park in the parking lot on the Meenteweg. Public transport is less well represented in this region, but if you don't mind an extra walk, you can get off at the Koningin Julianaweg stop in Oldemarkt.
