Hiking

This is a 6.5 km walk that takes you on an enchanting journey through the beautiful landscape around Kasteel Hoensbroek. This walk combines natural beauty with historical splendor and takes you past some of the most fascinating sights in the area.

The walk starts on the green Laervoetpad, where you are immediately immersed in a serene environment full of lush greenery. Enjoy the peace and quiet as you walk along the picturesque Geleenbeek, which meanders through the landscape like a silver ribbon.

As you continue walking, you will arrive at Terschuren, a charming village with characteristic architecture and a rich history. Take time to admire the traditional farmhouses and historic buildings found here. Don't forget to stop at one of the local cafes for a refreshing drink or a tasty local delicacy.

The crowning glory of this walk is of course Hoensbroek Castle, an imposing medieval castle. Admire the imposing towers, moats and beautiful gardens as you get closer to the castle. Visit the castle itself and discover the rich history behind its thick walls. Explore the impressive halls, decorated with antique furniture and works of art, and learn about life in the castle through the ages.

Hoensbroek Castle is easily accessible by both car and public transport. If you come by car, there are enough parking spaces available at the castle. Just follow the signs to the car parks nearby. Those who prefer public transport can take the train to Hoensbroek station and then take a short walk to the castle.

Geleenbeek

Highlight • River

The Geleenbeek rises in Benzenrade (Heerlen) and flows into the Maas near Stevensweert under the name Oude Maas. The place Geleen owes its name (originally "Op-Geleen", the current Oud-Geleen) to its location near the river, which formed the eastern border of the municipality. The length of the Geleenbeek is 45.2 km.

The stream gets its name from the Latin name Glana which means "clear stream".

Hoensbroek Castle

Highlight • Castle

After knight Herman Hoen had received the place Gebrook as a gift in 1388, the line living there added the place to their name to distinguish it from other lines of the Hoen family and called themselves Hoen tzo Broeck, Hoen van den Broeck and finally van Hoensbroeck, in German from ( and to) Hoensbroech. The name Hoensbroek then passed on to the castle and the place. But the old name Gebrookhoes or Kasteel Gebrook is still in use, especially in Limburg, where the castle Kesjtieël is called Gebrook and the village is also called Gebrook.

Nice short and varied walk, to stretch my legs on my 👨‍🦲♂️ birthday. The temperature quickly rose (more than predicted) and rain is expected tonight, much more tomorrow, we will get the three/four seasons in one day 😎.
Ps: Fortunately, the rain weather forecast once again did NOT come true 🥹

A lovely evening walk/scavenger hunt through the Geleenbeek Valley. With some fun questions. With one incorrect answer, we took second place.

Showing Translation

A detour from Hoensbroek Castle, a walk to fill the day after the visit to the castle, not highly recommended for me because of the busy sounds of the nearby highway
