This is a demanding mountain bike trail, classified as a "hard mountain bike ride." It requires very good fitness and advanced riding skills. The technical difficulty is rated as "heavy" on the Single Trail Scale (STS), and you should be prepared for sections where pushing your bike might be necessary due to rocky terrain or steep gradients.
The 41.1-kilometer loop offers varied terrain, including asphalt, unpaved sections, paved roads, and gravel. You'll encounter "strada bianca" (gravel roads) which can have challenging stones, as well as segments of fine gravel ("breccino"). Be ready for some rocky sections, especially on ascents, where you might need to dismount and push your bike.
The route is celebrated for its breathtaking panoramic views. You'll enjoy stunning vistas of Lake Fiastra nestled among the hills and mountains, especially from the View of Lake Fiastra from the Southwest. The Rifugio del Fargno offers an unparalleled skyline overlooking the dolomitic massif of Monte Bove Nord. The entire journey through the Monti Sibillini National Park provides a continuously engaging natural backdrop.
While the exact starting point for parking isn't specified, the loop starts and ends around Lago di Fiastra. It's advisable to look for designated parking areas near the lake, which serves as a common access point for trails in the area. Public transport options to this somewhat remote area are generally limited, so driving is usually the most practical way to reach the trailhead.
The best time to tackle this demanding route is typically from late spring to early autumn (May to October). During these months, the weather is generally more stable, and snow has usually melted from the higher elevations, especially around Forcella del Fargno. Always check the local weather forecast, as conditions in the mountains can change rapidly.
As this trail is located within the Monti Sibillini National Park, dogs are generally allowed but must be kept on a leash at all times. This is crucial for the safety of your pet, other trail users, and to protect the local wildlife. Always carry waste bags and pack out all trash, including pet waste.
Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required for mountain biking on established trails within the Monti Sibillini National Park. However, it's always good practice to respect park regulations, stay on marked trails, and be aware of any temporary restrictions or local rules that might be in place, especially concerning protected areas or wildlife.
Yes, the route intersects with several other trails. You'll find yourself on sections of the Great Ring MTB Stage 1, Great Ring MTB Variant, and Great Ring MTB Stage 2. It also crosses parts of the Cammino nelle Terre Mutate - asse principale, Strada del Fargno, and the Great Sibylline Ring Stage 2 and Stage 3, among others.
Absolutely! The Rifugio del Fargno, situated at an altitude of 1800-1820 meters, is a classic destination for cyclists. It offers a perfect spot to rest, enjoy meals, and soak in the incredible views. This octagonal refuge is specifically designed to withstand the strong winds characteristic of the Forcella del Fargno, making it a reliable and welcoming stop.
Forcella del Fargno is renowned as the highest road pass in the Marche region and is often considered the most panoramic road in the entire Apennines. Its elevation and strategic location offer spectacular, far-reaching views, making it a highlight of this challenging mountain bike loop.
No, this trail is not suitable for families with young children or beginner mountain bikers. It is explicitly classified as a "hard mountain bike ride" requiring "very good fitness" and "advanced riding skills." The significant elevation gain, varied and often technical terrain, and potential need to push your bike make it challenging for inexperienced riders.
Beautiful ride from Lake Fiastra entering the Sibillini with wonderful landscapes and panoramas, I highly recommend it
On the Bolognola side, pedestrians and bicycles are also prohibited, but on the Fiastra side, it's possible to pass. Anyway, it's very beautiful and scenic.
Ps. Don't take the maximum speed into account, the Garmin probably had some problems going downhill😅
Great tour with a special high-altitude landscape, a good path and fantastic views. Can get very cold in October, November at the top of the pass (above 1800 m).
Done with Chiara on August 22, 2024 and had lunch at the Rifugio del Fargno. Amazing!!!!! I have already visited the Monti Sibillini National Park, already done the GAS in MTB so let's say that I can say I have seen something of this territory, so I can say that with this splendid ring you have the opportunity to see practically all the landscape aspects of these mountains, if you have the opportunity to do it in late spring the Prati del Ragnolo are completely covered in flowers, a spectacle! The route is technically without any difficulty, I only underline the long climb that in about 27 km takes you from Lake Fiastra to the Rifugio del Fargno. Lunch at the Refuge with polenta and mushrooms and then we tackle the gradual and long dirt descent that takes us back to the starting point passing by the Piani di Pao, beautiful prairies.
Nice panoramic route with beautiful views of the surrounding valleys with constant slopes without jolts. Recommended
From fistra uphill for 25km, up to the Fargno refuge. Then all downhill to Bolognola. White roads, there is no water, a bit of training is needed if with the muscle. Then from Bolognola you go towards the meadows of ragnolo, a last stretch uphill. Then all downhill to Fiastra. Not to be done in the hottest period, especially if one drinks a lot. Good fun!!!
