The archipelago of Kvarken - located at the narrowest point between Sweden and Finland - has a long history: From the old fishing port of Bodback, dangerous trips over the rocky waters to Umeå were repeatedly undertaken. In addition to mail, government officials were also transported in this way. Today only a small stream connects the harbor with the sea.
The Bodvattnet Runt Circle Trail takes you - accompanied by informative boards - around the waters of the island of Björkö and brings you closer to the unique landscape of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Kvarken. One of its special features can be observed from the “Saltkaret” observation tower in particular: the so-called De Geer moraines, named after the Swedish geologist Gerard de Geer, are stone accumulations around five meters high and several hundred kilometers long that characterize this area. The long, narrow moraine ridges that accumulated in the crevasses of the glaciers when the ice retreated protrude from the water. In general, the land here stands out from the sea at a rapid pace. It definitely manages up to nine millimeters per year. Here you will find, among other things, abandoned boathouses that once stood in the water - an all-round exciting circular route!
