This route was planned by komoot.
The trail typically starts from the charming medieval village of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert. You'll find designated parking areas within or just outside the village, which serves as an excellent base for exploring the area before or after your hike.
The Les Fenestrettes Loop is rated as moderate. While it's accessible for most skill levels, some sections require good fitness and sure-footedness due to elevation gain and varied terrain. It's not considered overly difficult for seasoned hikers, but beginners should be prepared for a challenging and rewarding experience.
You'll encounter a varied terrain, predominantly unpaved, with some short paved sections. Expect to traverse large screes, winding paths through a wooded valley, and forest tracks. A unique feature is the 'fenestrettes' itself – an astonishing corbelled path built by monks above the void, adding to the trail's distinctive character.
The trail offers breathtaking views and wonderful panoramas. Key highlights include the stunning Cirque de l'Infernet, the unique Les Fenestrettes – Views of the Cirque de l'Infernet, and the expansive View of the Cirque de l'Infernet. You'll also enjoy vistas of the Val de Gellone and the limestone massif of the Monts de Saint-Guilhem.
Spring and autumn are generally the best times to hike this trail, offering pleasant temperatures and vibrant scenery. Summers can be very hot, especially in the exposed mineral sections, while winters might present colder conditions. Always check local weather forecasts before you go.
Yes, the route covers 100% of the official 'Les Fenestrettes' trail and also passes through significant sections of the GR 74 (85%) and the Via Tolosana (44%). You'll also find smaller portions intersecting the Grande Traversée de l'Hérault - Itinéraire Nord, Le col de la croix de fer, CSG 11 : Saint-Maurice-Navacelles - Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, and Notre-Dame-du-Lieu-Plaisant.
While specific regulations for dogs on this particular trail are not detailed, it is generally advisable to keep dogs on a leash when hiking in natural areas, especially within the Grand Site de France Gorges de l'Hérault. This helps protect local wildlife and ensures a pleasant experience for all hikers.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Les Fenestrettes Loop itself. However, the trail is located within the protected area of the Grand Site de France Gorges de l'Hérault, so please respect all local regulations regarding nature conservation.
The 'fenestrettes' are a magnificent corbelled path, a remarkable medieval structure built by the monks of Gellone Abbey in the 18th century. These masonry cantilevers were originally created to allow muleteers to pass. This historical engineering marvel, combined with the spectacular natural landscape of the Cirque de l'Infernet, makes it a truly unique and memorable part of the hike.
Yes, since the trail starts from Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, you'll find a range of amenities in the village. This includes cafes, restaurants, and accommodation options, making it an ideal place to relax and refuel before or after your hike.
Given the moderate difficulty and varied terrain, we recommend sturdy hiking shoes, sufficient water, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and snacks. A map or GPS device is also advisable, as are layers of clothing to adapt to changing weather conditions.
One of the great classics of the region! Breathtaking nature and views on a very accessible route, I highly recommend 🤗
Great hike full of amazing scenery to take in. Every turn and twist on the path reveals more and more fantastic views. More or less half of the tour is on a steady climb, nothing too difficult. This slowly leads you to views over the pic saint lou, the cirque de l'infernet. On the path going back down to St Guilhem you will come across the fenestrelles that hold up part of the path.
Small steep hill at the start of the walk, then cool hike. Very little shade, to be avoided in summer.
Great tour with spectacular views, good paths, no steep inclines - we recommend doing the tour counterclockwise for better visibility
The Saint-Guilhem parking lot still costs €8 for 4 hours.
