Running

The edges at Curbar and Froggatt are linked by a single trail, running like a balcony overlooking the Derwent valley. To the west, views reach towards Longstone and Eyam moors and the picturesque villages of Curbar and Froggatt. The edge itself is steep and in some places overhanging, with hundreds of classic rock climbing routes. Immediately below the edge, dense ancient woodland fringes the slopes, a contrast to the open heather covered moor to your right.

Running here is special, with trails perfect for a gentle run with friends, taking in the views. But they’re also fantastic for fast running, racing on gravelly trails, hopping the gritstone boulders and pushing hard. Navigation is straightforward with obvious trails and easy route finding.

This 4.9-mile (7.9 km) Tour takes most runners around an hour. Curbar Gap car park is popular and the first section of the route can get busy, so over the summer months it’s worth choosing early mornings or evenings to make the most of the running. The car park is pay and display but free for National Trust members. If you plan to use public transport the closest buses drop off in Baslow, from where you can run the Baslow Edge path to join our Tour adding about 2.5 miles (4 km) in total.

There aren’t any refreshment stops on this Tour other than the occasional ice-cream van if it’s warm. Cafe 19 at Calver crossroads isn’t far away and there is a pub, food shop and petrol station there too. For more cafes, shops and accommodation Baslow, Bakewell or Hathersage are closest.

View from Curbar Edge

Highlight • Natural Monument

Curbar Edge is a gritstone escarpment that affords spellbinding views over the Peak District. Trail running over the edge is great due to the interesting rocks and technical paths to navigate. Plenty of great places to stop for a moment, too.

Froggatt Edge

Highlight • Trail

Froggatt Edge is a gritstone escarpment with an amazing path along the top. Run from the north it's slightly downhill and brilliant fun although it does get busy sometimes. If you carry on this edge turns into Curbar Edge further south.

White Edge

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

White Edge is a boulder jumble of an edge, it lacks the sheer cliff faces of nearby Froggatt and Curbar but makes up for this with amazing views and lower footfall. The edge runs across Big Moor to the east of and roughly parallel with Froggatt Edge. The trail is gravelly and well defined with a few big rocks to keep you concentrating. Combining the White Edge trail with the Froggatt Edge trail makes a great running loop from the north or south.

White Edge Trig Point

Highlight • Viewpoint

This is a pleasant quieter walk as most seem to keep to froggatt and curbar. If your lucky the stag and doe's will be about especially in the autum and spring.
