Brenig cycle trail — Llyn Brenig

Gravel riding

Just as the Alwen cycle trail circles the Alwen Reservoir, so does the Brenig route circle the reservoir known as Llyn Brenig. The route is largely flat, though there is a hill in the middle that rewards you with some pretty spectacular views.

Start by exiting the visitor centre and heading south towards the dam on a singletrack, following the signs for Brenig cycle trail. At the junction, turn left to ride across the dam on the gravel track, turning left again to keep the water beside you.

The long gravel road twists and turns as you cycle around inlets on the eastern shores of Llyn Brenig. Further along, you begin to climb on a paved road, with a wind farm to your right, and eventually reach a main road. Turning left, the cycle trail is adjacent to the road, soon peeling further away onto a sublime singletrack trail through Gors Maen Llwyd nature reserve.

The views from up here are also fantastic, reaching as far as the Clwydian Range and North Wales coast on clear days. You reach the high point of the ride atop Bryn Maen, and then drop down into the forest and over the little stone bridge, Pont Brenig.

To ride back to the visitor centre, you follow the track down the western flank of the reservoir, which is much more sheltered. Take great care when you rejoin the road for the final section, as the road is one-way in the opposite direction for cars.

Llyn Brenig

Highlight • Viewpoint

You can find some glorious views here on the edge of Llyn Brenig. Llyn is Welsh for lake.

The dam is fairly recent; it was begun in 1973 and finished in 1976. It maintains the flow of water to the River Dee, not to be confused with the river of the same name in Aberdeenshire.

The water supplied by this reservoir feeds into North-East Wales and North-West England, including the Liverpool area.

Llyn Brenig Dam

Highlight (Segment) • Structure

Crossing over the top of the Llyn Brenig dam you'll follow a wide and flat gravel track that makes for an easy ride while you soak in those marvellous views over the water and down the bank on the other side into the lush green valley.

Look out for the fingerposts with trail markings to help you navigate onto your preferred route. You may be surprised just how long it takes to cross here, I thought it was further than it looked!

Llyn Brenig — East Shore Gravel Track

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

A long and winding doubletrack gravel road that flanks the eastern shore of Llyn Brenig.

It's a little rough in places so best on a gravel bike, sturdy hybrid or mountain bike rather than a pure road bike.

Enjoy the views as you meander around the little inlets and see what wildlife you can see across the water.

Cairn Ben Lloyd Singletrack

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

A fantastic section of singletrack as you wind your way through Gors Maen Llwyd nature reserve to the north of Llyn Brenig. The undulating trail features on the Two Lakes and Brenig marked cycle routes.

Look into the distance when you rejoin the road heading west to east and you may be able to see the ridge of the Clwydian Range and the sea beyond.

Llyn Brenig Visitor Centre

Highlight • Rest Area

The visitor centre at Llyn Brenig is open all year round, with extended hours during the fishing season.

There's an adventure playground, picnic area, cafe, osprey exhibition, gift shop, public toilets and a wide range of activities available. The cafe boasts amazing views over Llyn Brenig thanks to the large glass wall and balcony.

For the seven cycle routes on offer here, there's also bike hire offered within the same building, as well as a bike wash facility.
