This route was planned by komoot.
This tour is part of the komoot collection "Regional Routes in the radrevier.ruhr." A very beautiful leisurely tour with fantastic views towards Münsterland in the north and the beginnings of the Sauerland in the south. Approximately 30% of the route is identical to the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route. However, the other roads and cycle paths are also free of significant damage. Pure enjoyment!
I'll start with the 😫😱: editing this tour and synchronizing it from the website to the app was a disaster. It took me several hours, as well as reinstalling the app. Annoying. The photos were all duplicated again. The order is still mixed up. That's why my captions are sometimes weird. I gave up 🥺 The rest was all the better 😃. We always just manage to avoid the rain ☂️, the Hellweg and the Ruhr Valley are both pure cycling pleasure 🚵, and with E, even Tinchen can manage the climbs ↗️ The flood of highlights, or rather, the plague, has fully taken hold here; I've since switched to "I don't recommend" because it's just too much for me. What I personally recommend and what made the tour special: The cycle paths are almost all in excellent condition. Even the short stretches along highways 🛣️ are safe and pleasant. After my time in Ireland, I've noticed this incredibly positively, and I'm happy about it. I had some concerns when planning beforehand, like: so much straight ahead? Won't that be boring? (Not at all) and then Ascension Day/Father's Day? Won't it be crowded and loud? (It stayed within pleasant limits, a few handcarts, a few boom boxes 🔊, that's it) I can highly recommend the bicycle church in Fröndenberg. Under the motto: Bike charged ✅ Bottle filled ✔️ Soul refreshed ✅ it's open during the day and invites you to experience church in a different way. We particularly like the multimedia display, where we can select illumination and music for our visit. It's truly something you don't experience every day, and we enjoy it 🔝🔝🔝 and literally recharge our batteries. Himmelmann Park, also in Fröndenberg and directly on the Ruhr River, is officially bicycle-free. It's worth getting off your bike, as the (very small) paths down to the riverbank 🏞️ are a delight and almost always very empty. If you have children with you: the park has the most amazing playground I know for miles around. The ice cream parlor was a new addition for us: mmmmmm delicious, but I always say that with 🍨 😂 The Haus Opherdicke near Holzwickede – moated castle, manor house, museum – is widely known, and quite rightly so. All I can say is, "Treat yourself, go there," if you haven't seen it yet! A very special place (we didn't visit the sculpture garden today, but that alone is worth the trip). Well, and then it goes downhill ↪️ along the beautiful Haarstrang (those views 😍), and that's how you eventually arrive in Unna. An already pretty town, but even prettier this weekend: "un(N)a feste Italiana" brings Italian joie de vivre, cuisine, love, and thousands of colorful lights to Unna. We're a little too early for the lights and, on the other hand, too late for dinner at home, so my husband decides he doesn't want to go right now. 🫡 OK, Sir Boss. I would have loved to see/smell/experience it. Maybe another time. 🤷 So, there was plenty of variety, the weather held up, and my legs 🦵🏼 are slowly getting used to the 🚲 again. There was ice cream too - great tour 👏👍🔝, definitely worth following along on 🎊
Today I cycled the tour from the Ruhr area "Trade routes - experience horizons". I made a change because it didn't make sense to me why the tour doesn't pass the Opherdicke moated castle. In addition, I forgot😕 to cancel the break at St. Josef, so that the part up to the starting point of the round is missing .☹️
This 45-kilometer circular route from @radrevier.ruhr starts in Unna and follows the traces of medieval trade routes along the historic Hellweg (Westphalian Hellweg). In the Middle Ages, a Hellweg was a military road or an important thoroughfare for long-distance trade, kept permanently clear of vegetation along a strip roughly three meters wide (about the length of a lance). The Westphalian Hellweg refers to the western section of this route connecting the Rhine and Elbe rivers. Starting in Unna, we first pass through the Nikolai Quarter, home to the International Library of Women Composers. As a public institution, its mission is to collect and archive works by women composers, thereby rediscovering forgotten compositions and making them accessible to the public. The route then leads us to the former execution site located on the Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago). Here, a memorial commemorates both the former execution site and the abolition of the death penalty, enshrined in Article 102 of the Basic Law (German Constitution). Starting in Unna, we first pass through the Nikolai Quarter, home to the International Library of Women Composers. From there, the route leads along meadows and fields up to the Haarstrang ridge, where we enjoy the view of the surrounding countryside. Via Scheda, we then descend to the Ruhr River and the Fröndenberg power plant. From here, we follow the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path. This leads us first to the Kiebitzwiese nature reserve. The viewing platform is located a short distance off the path. The path is easily navigable with regular bicycles, and there is a bicycle parking area just before the platform. From the viewing platform, you can observe various bird species in the wetlands, as well as Taurus cattle, which are, however, at a distance. In Fröndenberg, a visit to the Chain Forge Museum is recommended, but unfortunately, it is only open on Sundays – or by prior arrangement. After continuing along the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path, we return to our starting point. Here at Bornekamp Park in Unna, we have another stroke of luck: We are able to observe a common buzzard undisturbed, which apparently has its territory here. ... NOTE: The footage of the common buzzard was taken in the wild. Some of the images show it eating its prey. This footage may not be suitable for all viewers! --- This bike tour is part of our collection: "Bike Tours in the Ruhr Area: Experience the Ruhr Area - On the Road in the radrevier.ruhr" https://www.komoot.com/de-de/collection/1351281/-fahrradtouren-im-ruhrgebiet-das-ruhrgebiet-erfahren-unterwegs-im-radrevier-ruhr
Today again followed a tour suggestion from Radrevier Ruhr. Unfortunately, on the section of the Ruhr cycle path you rarely see the Ruhr. But the views on the heights are great and the moated castle Haus Opherdicke is definitely worth a visit.
Tour idea found at radrevier.ruhr - thanks for the very nice idea! Very varied .. the Hellweg as an old trade route in connection with the Rugrtalradweg. Start and finish in Unna. Very nice everything!
A wonderful tour on the edge of the Sauerland. For a gourmet cyclist like me without an e-bike, however, some climbs were a challenge.
At the start of the new 2023 cycling season, there was a comfortable holiday bike ride in the sunshine from the Ruhr cycling area 🤗
