This route was planned by komoot.
Otherwise always with a racing bike, today with a bike. And much more relaxed, except for a few meters, everything is a bike path with a great view 😁
Anyone who wants to do this tour I recommend doing it in the opposite direction to mine. Clockwise keeping the lake on your right. 😜
Beautiful lake tour in Umbria, we drove from Calabria to the fourth largest lake in Italy. The tour around the lake, no inclines, but always on cycle paths away from the roads. At ☀️☀️ 38 degrees it was easy to sweat, during our break there was fresh sea 🐟🐟, tasted delicious, then we drove on again.. Nice round and the city had something too..
The tour around the lake is recommended. When planning, I thought that the path would be pretty close to main roads. But you usually don't hear or see them at all. Most of the route runs on single trails that are similar to our German forest trails. Only about 5 km before Castiglione you drive to the place on a busy road. The bike path is already under construction. We particularly liked the fact that we always had a view of the surrounding hills and the lake with its islands. The nature reserve between Castiglione and Badiaccia is also interesting. For a café, however, we had to cycle through a lot of small villages! 😄
The part from Castiglione del Lago to San Feliciano is the best, most protected and shaded. From San Felicano onwards it is sunnier and closer to the road (the last km of the cycle path before reaching Castiglione del Lago are currently under construction and therefore the route is on the state road)
Lake Trasimeno in Umbria is Italy's fourth-largest lake and is picturesquely situated near the border with Tuscany. Those who circumnavigate it experience a scenically peaceful tour, one that impresses less with constant proximity to the shore, but rather with targeted views and the rolling hills in the background. You cycle directly along the lake, especially in towns such as Passignano sul Trasimeno or Castiglione del Lago. In between, the route mostly runs some distance from the shore. At certain points, the view opens up – and then the panorama is often impressive: rolling hills, clear lines of sight, wide open spaces. It is precisely in these moments that you clearly recognize the proximity to Tuscany – the landscape, with its colors and shapes, bears a similar signature. The surface is mostly grippy gravel, pleasant to ride and hardly technically demanding. The route is signposted throughout, which makes navigation easier. I cycled the circuit counterclockwise – the scenery was harmonious, with beautiful views at the right times. Is it better to go the other way? Possibly – it depends on personal preference. If you prefer the lake on your right or want to visit the towns in a different order, you can try going clockwise. Conclusion: A relaxed, harmonious gravel route with select viewpoints, quiet sections, and Italian flair – not a firework of highlights, but a very well-rounded experience.
Finally they rebuilt the 2 bridges that were missing in Castiglione del Lago and added another piece of cycle path after San Feliciano
Classic tour of the lake, compared to a few years ago other parts of the cycle path have been added, some are finishing now, let's say that the parts of asphalt on the road are fortunately few left.
