Parking is available near the trailhead. A small donation of €3 per person is typically requested to help maintain the parking area and access to this private land.
The terrain is varied. While parts are relatively easy, you'll encounter rolling hills, and some sections can be steep and rocky. After rain, areas may become boggy, so sturdy hiking shoes are highly recommended. A walking stick can also be beneficial on steeper inclines.
The trail is generally considered easy to moderate. While accessible to a range of fitness levels, some sections have uncertain footing and steeper hills, especially as you approach the main attractions. It's a good option for active families, but be prepared for varied terrain.
The primary attraction is the dramatic Dunlough Castle Ruins, also known as "Three Castle," with its three towers perched on a rocky promontory. You'll also enjoy stunning View of Mizen Head Cliffs and the serene beauty of Dunlough Bay. The Three Castle Head Ruins themselves offer panoramic views of the Atlantic coastline and surrounding landscapes.
No, dogs are not permitted on this trail. The area is part of a working sheep farm, and for the safety of the livestock, dogs are not allowed.
There is no formal entrance fee or permit required. However, a small donation of €3 per person is typically requested to help maintain the parking and access to this private land.
The trail can be enjoyed year-round, but spring and summer offer the most pleasant weather for hiking and clearer views. Be prepared for potentially boggy conditions after rain, regardless of the season.
Dunlough Castle is notable for its remote and dramatic clifftop location, overlooking a small lake and the Atlantic Ocean. Dating back to the 15th century, it's one of the oldest Norman castles in southern Ireland and offers a unique blend of ancient architecture and breathtaking natural scenery.
The Three Castle Head Loop is in a relatively remote area. You'll find more amenities, including cafes and pubs, in nearby villages like Schull or Goleen, which are a short drive away.
The trail offers unparalleled panoramic views. You'll see the rugged Atlantic coastline, the dramatic Mizen Head Cliffs, Dunmanus Bay, and the untouched mountains, rocks, and heath of the surrounding landscape. The view of Dunlough Castle itself, nestled between a lake and the ocean, is particularly iconic.
Despite its historical significance and beauty, Three Castle Head is often considered a hidden gem along the Wild Atlantic Way. It tends to be less crowded than other popular tourist spots, offering a more secluded and serene hiking experience.
We hiked to Dunlough Fort in the very west of the southernmost peninsula. It's nowhere near as crowded as neighboring Mizen Head. The road to the parking lot is getting smaller and smaller, so you have to look for an alternative place when there is oncoming traffic. Luckily very few go there. The hike itself is just great. Breathtaking views over the cliffs and the sea, the old castle ruins, meadows, heath and the lake in between.
An adventurous road, finally single-lane with passing points, leads to the three ruins. The hike is highly recommended and offers many views of the sea. You walk a lot on grass paths. There is a large parking lot there.
Park your vehicle on the gravel parking lot and off you go. 3€ is requested as a donation. Short hike to Three Castle Head. Also suitable for "gym slippers" 😉 The view... Fantastic From here on, hiking boots recommended. Continue along barely recognizable paths through pure nature to the other side of the lake. Back over the small hill with great views towards Sheap's Head. Caution! Don't get too close to the cliffs 😱 Danger of falling. Super great hike. Highly recommended!!!
