Hard road ride. Very good fitness required. Mostly well-paved surfaces and easy to ride. The starting point of the route is right next to a parking lot.

Varese Ligure Town Center

Highlight • Settlement

Varese Ligure is the last major site at the top of Varata.
With its pretty cobbled main square, it offers a beautiful old town ambience as well as restaurants, bars and an ice cream parlor. An optimal place for a rest before the next pass.
From here it is primarily for the racing cyclist in three directions.
The very nice driveway up to the Passo di Centro Croci, which brings us in the direction of Tarotal. The Passo del Biscia whose fantastic descent from the pass towards Chiavari leads to the sea. Or you can follow the Vara Valley downhill and without having to cope with many meters you can reach La Spezia.

Passo di Cento Croci (1,055 m)

Highlight • Mountain Pass

Beautiful step that starts from Varese Ligure and in 12 km of ascent it goes up to 1000 meters of the brow.
Regular ascent very exposed to the sun but which from half onwards gives way to an Alpine panorama that has few equals in the Apennines.

View of the Valleys

For me it is a beautiful ride, a bit challenging from Montegroppo.

Passo della Cappelletta

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The Passo della Cappelletta is a beautiful, extremely lonely pass. Nevertheless, a very good road runs up here. The reason for this is the large wind turbines that are used to generate electricity.
The conclusion that it is often quite windy here is correct.
The pass is a real ascent from the east. Initially steep, then very pleasant to drive in a great landscape.
A recently asphalted ridge road comes from the northwest, which branches off just below the Passo di Cento Croci. This offers great views towards the Varatal.
Ideally, the pass is therefore driven from east to west. However, since the road is very good, the descent is not a problem.
