This circular hike typically takes around 2 hours and 23 minutes to complete. It is classified as a moderate trail, suitable for hikers with a good fitness level due to its varied terrain and elevation changes.
The trail, also known as the 'Ruta de los Duendes', starts and ends in Herrera de Valdivielso. You can usually find parking within the village, which serves as the primary access point for this route.
The trail offers diverse terrain, guiding you through pine forests, small oaks, and boxwood, as well as past cherry orchards. As you ascend, you'll be treated to stunning panoramic views of the Sierra de la Tesla and the Montes Obarenes. Sections include a rocky ridge and tracks, with the highlight being the 'Bosque Encantado'.
The most distinctive feature is the 'Bosque Encantado' (Enchanted Forest), where trees are adorned with colorful crocheted blankets as part of an 'Urban Knitting' art project. You'll also pass by the Twisted Tree of the Ruyales and various Kilometer Signs. The Enchanted Forest with Urban Knitting itself is a highlight.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, it's always recommended to keep your dog on a leash, especially in areas where wildlife like roe deer might be present, or when passing through agricultural areas.
While the trail can be enjoyed in any season, spring is particularly recommended for seeing the cherry blossoms in bloom. The 'Bosque Encantado' offers a unique experience year-round.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Sierra Portillo de Junca — circular from Herrera de Valdivielso trail or to access the general Valle de las Caderechas area where it is located. It is freely accessible to the public.
Given its moderate difficulty and varied terrain, the trail is suitable for families with children who are accustomed to hiking and have a good fitness level. The 'Enchanted Forest' can be a particularly engaging feature for younger hikers.
Yes, this route is entirely part of the 'Ruta de los Duendes', which is a well-known local trail. You will be following this named path for the duration of your hike.
We recommend bringing sturdy hiking shoes, sufficient water, snacks, sun protection, and a camera to capture the unique scenery of the 'Enchanted Forest' and panoramic views. Given the varied terrain, trekking poles might also be beneficial.
Herrera de Valdivielso is a small village, but you may find local establishments offering refreshments or traditional meals. It's advisable to check opening hours in advance, especially outside of peak tourist seasons.
- Garmin data: 3h total time, 450m total difference in altitude. Video: https://www.relive.cc/view/vAOZDgn14yq - NOTE: it would be a nice and interesting route even without the enchanted forest, but that forest is really a delight, so... very good route, and very comfortable. A good recommendation from @Kula
circular route Beautiful family walk, where you can enjoy wonderful views of the Valdivieso and Cariges valleys. In addition, the spectacular enchanted forest with its decorations on the trees is visited. Normally the route is done in the opposite direction to how we have done it, but we have chosen to climb the steepest slope instead of going down it.
