Gravel round through the Große Lautertal

Gravel riding

It starts at the train station in Merklingen. From here you cycle via Laichingen to Feldstetten and then take your gravel tires to the former military training area in Münsingen. On this unique section of the route you have a vision that is second to none. Thanks to the numerous sheep along the way, the scenery is also a bit reminiscent of Scotland. Holiday feeling par excellence and definitely a real highlight on the trip.

After you have passed Münsingen, you will soon dive into the beautiful Große Lautertal, through which a wonderful gravel path leads. With shining eyes, you follow the playful loops of the river and pass several fairytale castles. There are numerous opportunities for a picnic or a leisurely break along the way. Simply choose a barbecue area of your choice and enjoy the atmosphere in this great valley.

Shortly before Lauterach you leave the Große Lautertal and drive through the idyllic Wolfstal up towards Bremelau, where after the steep climb you can fortify yourself in a nice farm café and recharge your batteries for the onward journey.

Then you continue rolling until you can once again enjoy the gravel slopes on the former military training area. From here you go back to Merklingen via Laichingen, where you can stock up on a few drinks and snacks in a kiosk before you get on the train and start your journey home - with unforgettable impressions in your luggage.

Merklingen (Swabian Jura) Station

Highlight • Rest Area

The Merklingen/Schwäbische Alb train station was reopened in December 2022. Since then, Germany's fastest regional train has stopped here, traveling at up to 200 kilometers per hour on the route between Wendlingen and Ulm.

The train takes you from Wendlingen to Merklingen/Schwäbische Alb train station in an unbeatable 14 minutes. And the best thing is: the one-way trip only costs 3.90 euros (including the bike). The train runs every hour and there are 16 bicycle parking spaces that do not need to be reserved and are located at the front on the journey to Merklingen and at the back to Wendlingen.

Tip top! 👌

April 12, 2025,Over the Alb through Gr. Lautertal & Wolfstal
Love this ride! The section between Merklingen and to Feldstetten is nothing special, but from Feldstetten onwards it's just fabulous! Firstly across the closed roads and wide open spaces of the Münsingen military training area, then the lovely easy riding down the beautiful Gr. Lautertal. The Wolfstal is fantastic, twisty and atmospheric, and the long climb back up after that …
This time, Germany's fastest regional train took you across the new Filstal Bridge in just 14 minutes from Wendlingen to the new Merklingen/Schwäbische Alb train station for a mere 2.70 euros (including a bicycle and with a Bahncard 25) – it couldn't be better.
