The trail to The English Waterfall (Cascade des Anglais) typically starts near Vizzavona. You can usually find parking available in the Vizzavona area, which serves as a common starting point for various hikes, including sections of the GR20. Specific parking instructions might vary, so it's advisable to check local signage upon arrival.
Yes, the trail is generally considered easy to moderate, making it suitable for families and amateur walkers. A common, shorter variant is a round trip of about 3 km with an elevation gain of around 100 m, taking approximately 1 hour. However, some sections near the waterfalls can be rocky and slippery, so good footing and appropriate shoes are recommended.
The English Waterfall is a pleasant hike even in summer, thanks to the ample shade provided by the ancient beech and Laricio pine trees in the Vizzavona forest. Spring and autumn also offer beautiful conditions with milder temperatures and vibrant foliage. The natural pools are particularly inviting for swimming during warmer months.
Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike to The English Waterfall within the Parc Naturel Régional de Corse. However, it's always good practice to respect park regulations, stay on marked trails, and practice Leave No Trace principles to preserve the natural environment.
The trail primarily winds through the beautiful Vizzavona forest. While much of the path is well-marked and accessible, be aware that sections closer to the waterfalls and the Agnone River can be rocky and slippery. For those attempting longer loops, some parts might become more technical.
You'll be treated to stunning mountain scenery, including magnificent views of the pyramid-shaped Monte d'Oro. The main attractions are the succession of approximately twenty picturesque waterfalls and crystal-clear natural rock pools carved by the Agnone River. One notable spot is a Deep pool suitable for jumping.
While the Corsica Regional Natural Park generally allows dogs, it's crucial to keep them on a leash to protect local wildlife and ensure the safety of other hikers. Be mindful of rocky and slippery sections, especially near the water, which might be challenging for some dogs.
Yes, the route to The English Waterfall merges with sections of the famous GR20 Principale, Corsica's renowned long-distance hiking trail. You may also encounter parts of the Boucle du Monte d'Oro and, to a lesser extent, the Variante Alpine GR20 and Sentier archéologique.
Absolutely! The English Waterfall is famous for its numerous crystal-clear natural rock pools carved by the Agnone River. These translucent pools are ideal for swimming and cooling off, especially during warmer weather. The smooth stones around them also offer perfect spots for sunbathing.
A common, shorter variant of the hike is a round trip covering about 3 km, taking approximately 1 hour. Longer routes, such as starting from Vizzavona station and following the GR20 waymarks, can be around 7 km round trip and take about 2-3 hours, depending on your pace and how much time you spend enjoying the waterfalls.
The English Waterfall (Cascade des Anglais) is notable for its historical charm and natural beauty. It gained popularity in the late 19th century as a favored picnic and bathing spot for the British aristocracy, hence its name. Today, it remains a prominent attraction, offering a refreshing stopover for GR20 hikers and a unique opportunity to swim in the cool, pure waters of the Agnone River amidst the shaded Vizzavona forest.
Wow, what a wonderfully beautiful tour 🥳 Completely understandable why many tourists (just like us) are on the road here, not only because it is also part of the GR20. But the higher and earlier you start walking, the fewer tourists there will be. You can start directly from the car park in front of the Vizzavona train station. There is also a restaurant with a shop that offers all kinds of food and everything you need for hiking, from painkillers to muscle ointments. There is also a small car park just before entering Vizzavona, which is a little closer to the route. The tour begins on a gravel forest path in a beautiful shady forest with old birches, pines and beeches which is well signposted. The first pool is soon reached and the path becomes rocky and sure-footedness and good shoes are required. Follow the white and red markings higher and higher to the Cascade and beautiful views. In between you should keep an eye out for the direction of the creek.
