Hiking

Embark on an easy urban hike through Genoa's historic core, a 3.8-mile (6.1 km) loop that takes about 1 hour and 39 minutes to complete. This route offers an immersive experience, winding through a maze of ancient alleys known as "caruggi" and opening into charming small squares. You will encounter architectural grandeur, from the impressive fountain at Piazza de Ferrari to the splendid Renaissance and Baroque palaces along Via Garibaldi, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Despite an elevation gain of 284 feet (87 metres), the trail is considered easy with easily-accessible paths, though some surfaces may be uneven.

This city tour is suitable for all fitness levels, but comfortable shoes are highly recommended due to the urban terrain, which includes paths, streets, roads, and footpaths. While generally easy, some parts of Genoa's historic center can have cobblestones or occasional steps, so be mindful if you have mobility concerns. The route is designed as a loop, making it convenient to start and finish at various points within the city center. No specific trailhead access, parking, or permit information is provided, suggesting it's a freely accessible urban walk.

Discover Genoa's rich history as you explore one of Europe's largest and best-preserved medieval historic centers, a tangible link to the city's powerful past as a maritime republic. The tour provides a unique atmosphere, revealing hidden gems, charming cafes, and local shops within the caruggi. You will also enjoy panoramic vistas of Genoa's colorful rooftops, the Ligurian Sea, and surrounding hills from viewpoints like Spianata di Castelletto, offering a breathtaking perspective of this complex and passionate city.

Giuseppe Mazzini Gallery

Highlight • Monument

Giuseppe Mazzini Gallery is Genoa's "living room", a covered walkway in the center of Genoa, near the Carlo Felice Theater and Piazza De Ferrari.
It runs parallel to Via Roma, the most elegant street in Genoa, where shops of important brands are located.
Both the Galleria Mazzini and Via Roma were built between 1870 and 1880
. Via Roma was originally the continuation of Via Assarotti, in this second part of the street it was decided to create a second row of buildings with a through tunnel interspersed with stained glass windows. In 1874 these works were declared of public utility by royal decree, leading to the opening of the Mazzini Gallery.
It is a typical example of iron architecture, a type of architectural production that spread in Europe at the beginning of the 19th century, especially in France and England, but also in Italy.

Porto Antico di Genova

Highlight • Historical Site

On the occasion of the Columbus year 1992 (500th anniversary of the discovery of America), the old port was fundamentally redesigned by the Genoese star architect Renzo Piano, who also played a key role in the new construction of Potsdamer Platz in Berlin. Today, this part of the port houses the Aquarium, the Maritime Museum, an Antarctic Museum, a Children's City, a Convention Center and numerous other cultural institutions.
The old port of Genoa has undergone a profound transformation in the last 20 years and is now one of the biggest tourist magnets in north-west Italy. Formerly a center of commerce and trade, the old port is now a berth for hundreds of tourist boats and yachts.

Genoa Aquarium

Highlight • Structure

The Genoa Aquarium (Italian: Acquario di Genova) is the second largest aquarium in Europe. The aquarium was opened in 1992 to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America and has since been expanded several times.
For me it represents the end point of one and the beginning of the next long-distance hike through Italy. I didn't look at it, I didn't have that much time. From the outside it is a spectacular building that is located right on the port. Around 12,000 inhabitants from 600 species of the world's oceans are shown in 70 habitats.

Villetta Di Negro, for many Genoese “Dinegro” just to save space, is a municipal park in the center of the city of Genoa, on a small hill overlooking Piazza Corvetto and Piazzale Mazzini, partially covered with the bastions, called “Luccoli”, the walls dating back to the 17th century.

The villa was built at the beginning of the 19th century by the Marquis Gian Carlo Di Negro and the park was decorated both with tall trees and paths with flowerbeds leading to the main villa, from which the view extended to the sea, with the presence of numerous statues, in keeping with the classical style of the period.

In the second half of the 19th century, after the death of the Marquis Di Negro, the complex was bought by the City of Genoa and the villa was used as the Botanical Garden of the University of Genoa.

During the bombings of World War II, the villa was practically destroyed except for the terrace overlooking the buildings in Piazza Fontane Marose, and in the following years it was rebuilt in modern style to house the Edoardo Chiossone Museum of Oriental Art.

In the period between the two world wars, the garden was enriched both with alien plants and with two artificial "caves", one large and one small. In addition, the waterfall was designed by creating overhangs and pools to make the flow of water more spectacular.

Piazza Corvetto is one of the largest, most elegant and important squares in Genoa: it is a tourist and cultural attraction, it is close to important destinations and places of interest. Named after Luigi Emanuele Corvetto, a Genoese politician of the Napoleonic era, it features a large flowerbed in the center of the roundabout with an imposing equestrian statue dedicated to Vittorio Emanuele II of Savoy.
It is surrounded by four almost symmetrical buildings and two parks facing each other.
Numerous streets lead to the square: Via Roma, one of the most elegant arteries of the city, Via Assarotti, an important residential street, Via Palestro, Via dei S. Giacomo e Filippo, Via XII Ottobre, Via Martin Piaggio and the Galleria Nino Bixio.
The seat of the prefecture overlooks it (the 16th-century palace of Andrea Doria, inside which there are frescoes by Luca Cambiaso).

Trail Reviews

Andreas 🍀🛵
May 14, 2023, Genua - Alter Hafen und Altstadt

City tour through Genoa. The suggested route comes directly from komoot. You might be able to save yourself the detour around Brignole train station. However, it provides glimpses of the real Genoa away from the tourist attractions. Only about 15 degrees, cool breeze and occasional rain showers. A metro with 8 stations runs straight through Genoa and is free from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A day ticket for public transport costs €4.50 per person. The city is strongly influenced by industry, the port and logistics. The immediate surroundings are accordingly "authentic". Tourism seems to play a rather minor role.

Rainy day. Too bad to start with a cinque terre walk. Wonderful to travel to Genoa in 1.5 hours by train for just over 10 euros (from Levanto). Genoa is beautiful. Route from the train to the old part is relatively boring to walk. Would choose a bus. Tickets can be ordered in advance via trainline.
