Extratour Haubergstour – Naturpark Lahn-Dill-Bergland

The extra tours in the Lahn-Dill-Bergland are in a class of their own, and the Hauberg extra tour is definitely no exception. Varied route, excellent signage, demanding but not extreme elevation profile, interesting facts along the way, sufficient rest areas for every taste and, and this is not the case with all extra tours, a hiking portal with direct public transport connections and a larger car park in the pretty center of Weidelbach . The Hauberg is not a single mountain, but a "country within a country", an area that has been used economically since time immemorial; Keywords are charcoal, brooms and bark mulch. Iron ore and slate mining were too unproductive here to have survived to this day. Luckily one might think so, because who would want to imagine themselves in this beautiful landscape of hilltops, quarries and winding towers. However, the area is deserted. Windbreaks, bark beetles and last but not least the forest fire about two weeks ago have battered the area extensively; the photos don't even begin to capture the full extent of the drama. But there are also glimmers of hope. Passages that seem like high heath – which never existed here – or low forest tell without words how nature is reclaiming the land bit by bit. For us from Rhein-Main, the Lahn-Dill-Bergland is practically on our doorstep; Depending on where you live, you are within 60 to 90 minutes in the middle of this generally unknown and yet so beautiful low mountain range. If you come from further away and are looking for alternatives to the often overcrowded hiking regions such as the Black Forest, Harz & Co, you have come to the right place: Today's encounter statistics: two mountain bikers, two walkers, a farmer repairing the pasture fence, two mobile fire guards, three horses, a small flock of sheep and a hind scared in the undergrowth.

Today we went on the hood mountain tour, which was closed by the Lahn Dill Bergland nature park and started in Weidelbach. This extra lap is the only greeting I haven't run yet. The closure has been marked on the homepage since the year before last due to tree felling work. So this morning we went to see what's going on. About the tour: Around the Hauberg (Eibertshain) really a sad picture. No trees, looks like a lunar landscape. The paths were affected by forest vehicles. Today the ground was frozen, so it went quite well. It gets very difficult in mud. Nevertheless, the tour is easy to walk on (almost no fallen trees from the past storms). Tip: I wouldn't run the loop in summer, because of the lack of trees on the mountain it's definitely like in the Sahara. Sturdy shoes are a must, preferably half-height boots.

Today's plan was for a training session for this year's hut hiking group. The group members come from Kleve, Cologne, Bad Camberg, the Rhine-Main area, Offenbach, Nidderau, and Wölfersheim. Six of the 13 participants participated today. This extra tour in the Lahn-Dill Uplands doesn't offer any major highlights. But it does offer great views and beautiful picnic spots. A small part of the tour leads from the Lederhosenhütte through the forest. The final section, which descends steeply back to Weidelbach across vast meadows dotted with trees and bushes, is magnificent. What I missed were single trails. It's mainly on gravel, wider paths. Great for chatting today. Some of us hadn't seen each other for a long time, or we needed to get to know each other. Luckily, the sky was overcast today. The hike isn't suitable for very warm, sunny days, as there's little shade. It must be beautiful when the broom, which grows abundantly there, is in bloom.

The tour leads through the mountain ranges of Haiger, Dietzholztal, Eschenburg and Dillenburg. It starts in the Haiger district of Weidelbach, continues past Ewersbach, quarries, Eschenburg, Knowledge Bach and the Dillenburg district of Frohnhausen. A really beautiful and, above all, currently strenuous tour. The ground is completely frozen and in many places there are even solid layers of ice. On other paths the snow is already melting and turning everything into muddy streams. Nevertheless, the 20km are easy to manage, but the occasional climb should not be underestimated. With the current low temperatures, hiking is a lot of fun, plus the wonderful sun and the magnificent views from the hills. Temperature fluctuations between -3 and plus 6 make one or two climbs a challenge. In these weather conditions you meet very few other hikers and the silence and the snow landscape are very noteworthy. The paths are mainly forest highways but, apart from the start, you don't cross any towns and you're only out in nature. I can absolutely recommend the route and I saw a lot of new things. L-D mountain path extra tour: "Haubergstour." Some HM, which "went into the bone" properly. But otherwise ok. I should be more careful next time: it saves unnecessary additional kilometers.🙈🤣
