Frequently Asked Questions

How challenging is The short route of the Granfondo di Alassio — ring tour?

This route is classified as difficult, featuring rolling short, steep hills and sustained climbs. Notable challenges include the climb to the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Guardia and the demanding Capo Berta Summit, which has an average gradient exceeding 7% with peaks of 10% over nearly two kilometers. It's a significant test for road cyclists.

What kind of terrain can I expect on this cycling route?

The terrain is characterized by a mix of picturesque Ligurian coastal roads and challenging inland hills. You'll encounter rolling short, steep ascents and sustained climbs, particularly in the hilly sections. The route offers breathtaking views throughout, combining the 'sun and sea' experience with mountainous stretches.

Where can I park and access the trailhead for this route?

The route typically starts and finishes in Alassio. While specific parking details for the Granfondo event vary, for a self-guided tour, you can look for public parking options within Alassio. The event itself is known for strong organization, so during the actual Granfondo, dedicated parking and access points are usually well-marked.

What are the best times of year to cycle this route?

The Ligurian coast generally offers pleasant cycling conditions for much of the year. Spring and early autumn are often ideal, providing comfortable temperatures and less crowded roads than the peak summer months. Always check local weather forecasts before heading out, especially for potential heat in summer or rain in late autumn/winter.

Are there any permits or fees required to cycle this route?

If you are cycling the route independently, there are no specific permits or fees required. However, if you plan to participate in the official Granfondo di Alassio event, registration fees and specific event rules will apply. Check the official Granfondo website for event-specific details.

What notable landmarks or scenic spots will I encounter?

The route offers several highlights. You'll enjoy a Scenic and curvy high road above Alassio, pass through the charming Testico Village and Panoramic View, and cross the Ginestro Pass. Other points of interest include Cesio, the challenging Capo Berta Summit and Milano-Sanremo Memorial, and Capo Cervo.

Is The short route of the Granfondo di Alassio — ring tour dog-friendly?

This route is designed for road cycling on public roads, and as such, it is not typically considered suitable or safe for cycling with dogs. The high speeds, traffic, and challenging terrain make it impractical for pets.

Does this route connect with other cycling or hiking trails?

Yes, the route intersects with several other paths. Notably, it covers significant sections of the Ciclovia Tirrenica (35%) and the Ciclovia Svizzera-Mare (33%). Smaller portions also overlap with trails like Sentiero Liguria - Tappa 25, Alassio - Moglio, and Via della Costa.

Is this route suitable for e-bikes?

While the route is challenging, e-bikes can make it more accessible for some riders. During the official Granfondo di Alassio event, the short route is sometimes open for non-competitive participation with e-bikes. If cycling independently, e-bikes are generally permitted on public roads.

Are there places to refuel or find amenities along the way?

The route passes through several small towns and villages, such as Testico Village and Cesio, where you may find cafes, small shops, or water sources. Alassio, as the start and end point, offers a full range of amenities including restaurants, cafes, and accommodation.

How long does it typically take to complete this cycling tour?

The estimated duration for this 68.5 km route is around 3 hours and 37 minutes of active cycling time. However, this can vary significantly based on your fitness level, the number of stops you make for photos or refreshments, and weather conditions. Given its 'difficult' rating, allow ample time.

Trail Reviews

March 7, 2024, Passo del Ginestro da Alassio

These trips to Liguria are always full of surprises! Taking advantage of a "gap" of good weather and with a couple of days available, I managed to complete a nice circular ride on a "classic" climb in the area. I started from a nice campsite located between Imperia and Diano marina, starting quite early I also managed to reach Alassio without finding the Aurelia too busy, after that the traffic problem doesn't arise, because the provincial roads that climb towards the mountain are usually very little frequented. From Alassio you immediately climb, rather sharply, for about 4 km of hairpin bends, in this handful of km you reach 400 meters above sea level, the road then lies on a long and panoramic slight slope up to the town of Testico, where a new steep climb leads to the Ginestro pass (667 m.) From the pass it is almost all downhill, first following the Sp 23 and then the Sp 95. Once you have passed the town of Cesio, you must be careful not to end up on the SS28 highway. For this reason, pay attention to a crossroads on the left (going down) which indicates Torria: the road rises briefly, then flattens... it is narrow and without other indications, but descends without the possibility of errors to Imperia through a spectacular natural environment between olive groves and small villages perched on the hills. once you reach Imperia, you complete the circular tour following the track (now cycle/pedestrian) of the old coastal road.
