This route starts well for cheese lovers! You will indeed find in the city center of Champagnole the famous Janin cheese dairy which is a real institution for this city. For more than five generations, Morbier, Tomme au Vin Jaune, Bleu de Gex, Cancoillotte and of course the inevitable Comté have been offered in this cheese dairy listed as the best worker in France.
Leaving Champagnole this time you will follow the course of the Ain to get to Nozeroy, a very old city that deserves to be discovered. Without really realizing it, you will then gradually climb up to the Saint-Sorlin pass before descending to the level of the village of Chaux-Neuve and Foncine-le Haut in the upper Saine valley. You thus join the route of the GTJ (La Grande Traversée du Jura).
Arrived at Foncine-le-Bas, you will branch off towards the village of Planches-en-Montagne. The route passes through the incredible Langouette gorges. There, if you want to go to the natural site, secure your bikes and explore the gorges on foot.
You will then go down the course of the Saine, to arrive in Syam, a village very close to Champagnole. In this town, a Palladian-style villa is worth a visit. Syam Castle is a curiosity in itself and will add the missing historical and architectural tone to this wonderful loop of almost 70 kilometers.
The opportunities to taste cheese are not lacking. Especially when approaching Foncine-le-Haut and Chaux-Neuve.
