Gravel riding

Every sport has its iconic places and with gravel in the Netherlands you quickly end up at the Deelerwoud. Here are two identical trees on either side of a beautiful gravel path that is photographed by many cyclists. This gravel monument really belongs in this Evergreen round.

You start at the carpool parking lot along the A50. And a vignette is not necessary for this route.
Watch your speed from the start, as you follow a path past a cemetery. This is also a short climb to the Staatsbosbeheer area, from where you look out over a beautiful heath. You follow the Koningsweg on a paved cycle path to the top of the Rozendaalse Veld. A long descent follows towards the gravel paradise Loenermark. Challenge yourself a bit by taking the dirt path next to the bike path. At full speed you arrive at a wide gravel road that continues for kilometers deep into Loenermark.
The most beautiful gravel roads of the Loenermark are included in this route. They are all nice and wide. At the small town of Loenen you come out of the woods and get acquainted with real Strade Bianche strips as they are only found in Tuscany. This is also a nice place for a coffee break, there are several providers.

The second part of unpaved strips in the woods of Loenermark are real hard-packed gravel strips. It doesn't get any better, you'll think. Almost not, because now the Deelerwoud comes with the most photographed gravel road in the Netherlands. A beautiful unpaved bike path that is wide enough to keep the momentum going.

After the Deelerwoud you turn left and through an entrance gate you arrive at the sandy Hooiweg, a beautiful and sometimes challenging strip along the Terlet glider field. The last unpaved strip goes over the Koningsheide, which looks 'rocky' but where you can keep up the pace.

Access Path to Maqbara Rawdah Al Moslimin

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Since 2023, a large Islamic cemetery has been located at the end of this path. This former forest path—now a fast gravel road—is used as an access road. So be extra careful, especially on the westward descent, to avoid causing any disturbance. Otherwise, it's a lovely path.

Descent Towards Rozendaalse Veld

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Or of course a climb back to Arnhem ;-)
Nice hard forest path with height difference. So wonderful when you fly down towards the Rozendaalse Veld, it is so annoying to climb on after a long tiring ride on the Veluwe.

The path is the better choice especially if you climb up to Arnhem. Paths parallel to these are either off-limits to cyclists or quite loose. Possibly the adjacent Golf Course Trail is a good option, but this is my personal favorite!

Beautiful singletrack along heathland

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Lovely singletrack along the edge of the Rozendaalse forest and a heathland on the other side. Property of Staatsbosbeheer, so cycling is possible here as long as you are mindful of the regularly present hikers. Touring cyclists and enjoyers welcome!

Gravel path Loenermark–Veluwezoom

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

An unpaved connection that connects the Veluwezoom with the Loenermark.
The path is part of the official MTB route as well as part of a node route. As a gravel cyclist without a MTB permit, you can therefore simply use this path, just like all other cycling junctions.
The path is a wonderfully wide forest path that runs for miles, up and down, and can be loose in some places. However, most of it is easy to cycle with a gravel bike!

Rolling gravel section through the heath

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Beautiful wide but winding and gently climbing gravel road through one of the larger heathlands of the Loenermark, with fantastic views along the way. The gravel is a bit loose here and there, but usually the path is fine for all bikes - including racing bikes. Halfway through, you can enjoy the view for an extra long time on the bench at the top of one of the slopes of the road.

Slatsdijk Gravel Road

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

The IJssel Valley is full of beautiful Strade Bianche strips. We take one to let you experience what it is like to race in the cycling classic Strade Bianche. The clay is well tamped and suitable for road bike tires.

Strade Bianche Weverstraat

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Beautiful Strade Bianche gravel road leading into or out of Loenen. A classic hard pack gravel road through village and fields, ridable on all types of bikes including road racers. The road is split up once in the village by a asphalt road. Beware of cars while crossing.

Strade Bianche Droefakkers

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

One of the many Strade Bianche gravel roads south of the Veluwe village of Loenen.
This gravel road through fields is easy to ride with all bikes including racing bikes.

Strade Bianche Groenendaal

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Amazing hardpack 'Strade Bianche' gravel road, part of the Loenermark gravel network. Ridable for all types of bikes, including road racers (if you're confident enough because of loose gravel). The scenery is forest x beautiful. Connect the gravel road to the west to ride the Groenendaal heather fields or ride east to connect up with Droefakkers... one of the most beautiful asphalt roads in the area.

Groenendaal gravel section

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

One of the best gravel spots in the region. As part of the bigger 'Loenermark' you have reached a small gravel paradise. This rolling road through the heather is one of the great gravel roads out there that you simply cannot skip in your ride! Doable for all bikes.

Unpaved road, Arnhemse Heide

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Beautiful dirt road that runs between the Deelerwoud and the Koningsheide, just north of Arnhem. The road mainly has a hard surface, but has sand in two places, so some people have to set foot on the ground. It is the only legally accessible unpaved connection between the above areas and therefore a popular connecting road for mountain bikers and gravel cyclists.

The Hooiweg (as this avenue is officially called) runs along the Arnhemse Heide, an official training area of the Ministry of Defense, so that the observant viewer will still see some bunkers in the field. On the other side, you have a view of the Deelen glider airfield through the bushes.

G50 Gravel Path (Veluwe)

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Not the A50... but the G50! The gravel-50 next to the highway, which incidentally does not bother you much. The G50 is a perfect connecting road for gravel bikers between Arnhem and the prelude to the Deelerwoud or the Veluwezoom. Although the trail has some loose spots, it is generally hardpack and great for cycling. Slightly sloping (like almost everything on the Veluwe).

Only 5,000 km this year. That can be different next year. 2025 was special. After over 35 years of paid employment, I started my own business. Partly office work, partly in the bicycle industry. A huge success. I'll definitely continue with that in 2026. There are more special things to come (more on that later), with a few fun adventures …

An morning ride for work. On paper straightforward, just like the route over the Loenermark and the Deelerwoud... but still, this ride was nicer than many others.

Because it was enjoyable this morning on the Veluwe. To escape the heat, we leave early and enjoy, besides the friendly morning temperatures, a completely deserted Veluwe. A private park deluxe. As a …

Lovely round of gravel through Loenermark, Terletse Heide and a bit of Posbank. It remains striking how wonderfully sheltered from the wind you ride on this circuit. And the gravel paths here are the driest in the Netherlands. So if you STILL want to cycle somewhere in these wet days, then you should cycle this route. Mainly hardpack gravel paths, …

Wonderful Gravel Clinic given for NL Tour rides. Super fun, educational and fun group! Everyone learned a lot and is at Gravel-next-level😅👍Great gravel route, without technical single tracks. Very nice nature decor.
Especially in Loenermark. Gently sloping landscape everywhere, significant elevation gain everywhere, spotting wildlife. It rains regularly here (that's why it's so green😝), so always bring a rain jacket …
